| Jul-31-14 | | Jim Bartle: Someone on ESPN, maybe Kurtjian, said Sox will be the first team to go from last to first to last in three years. Sort of like Tony LaRussa in the World Series: all or nothing. |
Jul-31-14
 | | WannaBe: BoSox have their next game Friday, hosting the Yankees. I think even the umpires will have to buy a program to know who is who... |
Jul-31-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Oy. I'm going to need some time to digest the latest Tigers' rumors. Not sure about this one. |
Jul-31-14
 | | WannaBe: Tiger is playing at Bridgestone Golf Tournament, what's the latest rumours?? Who is he going out with now? |
| Jul-31-14 | | Jim Bartle: Scherzer, Verlander, Price. Pretty good. |
Jul-31-14
 | | WannaBe: Oooooo, Tigers got Price. Well, I hope the Price is Right. |
Jul-31-14
 | | Phony Benoni: This trade makes me glad I don't listen to sports talk radio. It's going to get blasted here. To get Price, the Tigers gave up starting pitcher Drew Smyly and center fielder Austin Jackson. They got an upgrade in the starting staff, no doubt. What's going to anger people is that they shored up their strength instead of their supposed weaknesses (bullpen, left side of the infield). If the trade had involved Jackson and some other part, fans would be happier: Smyly could move back tot he bullpen, where he was very effective last year. The Tigers do have a bit of an overload in the outfield at the moment, but two guys (Rajai Davis, J.D. Martinez) are playing well above their heads based on past performance. They may regret not having the more experienced Jackson in October. What's the contract situation with Price? Since Scherzer will probably leave after the year, they did need a high-quality replacement. |
Jul-31-14
 | | WannaBe: Price is locked in for remainder of this year and next (2015). Not sure if he will be restricted or unrestricted free agent. Surprised that TB traded him. Does that mean they are giving up on this season? A lot of people (e.g. ESPN) are saying TB should not be in a rush to trade Price now. Because TB can always trade him in spring 2015 or before trading deadline <NEXT YEAR>. Well, they pulled the trigger and traded him. |
| Jul-31-14 | | Jim Bartle: <...but two guys (Rajai Davis, J.D. Martinez) are playing well above their heads...> Trading based on hot streaks seems to be less than in the past. But man, the Giants used to be the champions of that. Garry Maddox was injured, Von Joshua filled in and was hitting, so they traded Maddox to the Phils. Joshua tanked. Orlando Cepeda was injured much of the time, they had another very good first baseman, Ray Sadecki threw a five-hitter against them, so they traded the two of them. Sadecki proceeded to get bombed every time out, while Cepeda was MVP the next year. They traded George Foster because Henderson was hitting. Henderson was good but no Foster. |
Jul-31-14
 | | perfidious: <Jim> Von who? |
| Jul-31-14 | | Jim Bartle: My point. They kept him and traded Maddox, who became a key part of the Phillies division and WS winners in the following years. The Giants picked Joshua up after the Dodgers cut him. Another terrible trade was sending Jack Clark to the Cards in 1985. He was injured at the time but still had hit great the year before during a partial season. They got four guys for him, none close to a star. |
Jul-31-14
 | | perfidious: <Jim> Barely remember Joshua--my recollection is of a left-handed hitting fourth OF. |
| Jul-31-14 | | Jim Bartle: That's about right. And they traded Maddox to let him play. Got Willie Montanez for him, a decent first baseman but not nearly enough. Got Darrell Evans for Montanez, though, and he was great. |
Jul-31-14
 | | WannaBe: So, if anyone read the details of the Oakland/BoSox trade, you'd see "Competitive Balance Pick". Well, what is it?? http://bleacherreport.com/articles/... |
Jul-31-14
 | | WannaBe: The only other time, (besides the 2014 Tigers after obtaining Price) that a team can start the past 3 Cy Young Award winners is the 1997 Atlanta Braves. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/1... Not sure what that means... |
Jul-31-14
 | | WannaBe: So, in a nut-shell, here is what transpired for the 'Contendas' Oakland and Detroit were swinging the big hay-round-house-makers. Biggest splash. Miami, Atlanta, NY Yankees, Seattle and St. Louis made some (minor) trades. Really under the radar. San Francisco trade for J. Peavy, big deal when it was announced, until today. Supposedly LA Dodgers killer (career 12-2 before last Sunday's start) and lost a very close game vs. Ryu. Baltimore, Angels, Dodgers, Toronto, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, virtually no report of any action. Dodgers were not willing to move Matt Kemp, and as far as I have read, nothing was done. |
| Jul-31-14 | | Jim Bartle: <Dodgers were not willing to move Matt Kemp, and as far as I have read, nothing was done.> Kemp makes too much money for what he produces these days. Nobody wants him. He's been playing well recently, though. |
Jul-31-14
 | | WannaBe: Just heard back from my bud in LA (Angels fan), apparently Angels don't have any (good) prospect to trade after they spent what they had to acquire H. Street from San Diego a few days ago. Plus, with the salary of A. Pujols, I don't know how much money Angels have to spend in the bank. Baltimore did make a (minor) deal, and acquired Miller (LHP) from BoSox. And Nationals acquired INF A. Cabrera from Cleveland. |
Jul-31-14
 | | WannaBe: Holy Sheet: C. Kershaw gave up 5 hits (no runs).
Bigger Holy Sheet: Dodgers scored 2 runs on 3 hits. Oh, wait, it's the Dodgers. Normal everyday game. |
| Aug-01-14 | | Jim Bartle: <Bigger Holy Sheet: Dodgers scored 2 runs on 3 hits. Oh, wait, it's the Dodgers. Normal everyday game.> It's 1966 all over again. |
| Aug-01-14 | | Jim Bartle: Apparently Donald Trump is serious about buying the Buffalo Bills. That would be a disaster, but I don't think the current owners would allow it after Trump led the suit against the NFL when he was an owner in the USFL. |
| Aug-01-14 | | playground player: Here's one I don't know the answer to, offhand, and it may take me some time to find it. Which threesome of pitchers won the most games, total, while pitching for the same team? My top guesses would be Palmer-McNally-Cuellar, or Grove-Earnshaw-Walberg. Or would it be Koufax-Drysdale-Osteen? |
| Aug-01-14 | | Jim Bartle: I don't know, but I'm sure Podres would be the third Dodger in the group. Nine years together versus two with Osteen. I suspect the leaders would be a group led by one of the big winners: Young, Johnson, Spahn, Mathewson. I gave Spahn/Burdette/Buhl a quick try and came up with 438, which is a good number to shoot at. Nine years together, averaging 16 wins each per year. How many times are three pitchers together nine years? And how many pitchers have 144 wins over just nine years? Both at the same time? The weakest of the three still had a hundred wins over those nine years. |
| Aug-01-14 | | playground player: <Jim Bartle> Spahn-Burdette-Buhl just beat out Palmer-Cuellar-McNally, who had 342. But Grove-Walberg-Earnshaw (Philadelphia A's, 1928-1933) had 350 wins. I wonder if anyone else did any better. |
| Aug-01-14 | | Jim Bartle: Well, if Cy Young had two teammates his entire career with a total of 0 wins, that would be 511. |
