 | | Phony Benoni: It's gotta be Maddux - Glavine - Smoltz. Though I guess I should look it up to be sure. |
Aug-01-14
 | | Phony Benoni: OK, definition problem here. From 1993-1999, Maddux - Glavine - Smoltz won 340 games for Atlanta. Smoltz then sat out the 2000 season, though he returned to the Braves in 2001 and 2002. Glavine left in 2003, and they did not pitch together after that. So it's 413 in the years they actually pitched, and 453 if you include the 2000 year when Smoltz was injured. |
Aug-01-14
 | | WannaBe: He did not go/pitch for another team, I'd count that... |
Aug-01-14
 | | Phony Benoni: New clubhouse leader, for the New York Giants 1904-1913 Christy Mathewson: 281
Red Ames: 106
Hooks Wiltse: 135
Tota;: 522
Mathewson-Joe McGinnity-Dummy Taylor (1902-1908): 440 |
| Aug-01-14 | | Jim Bartle: At least my general prediction looks OK. I'm amazed that three pitchers were on the Giants for ten straight years. I'd certainly count Smoltz as a teammate for 2000. |
Aug-01-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Walter Johnson wins 1-0 in eleven innings, and Germany Schaefer steals first base. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/l... See account underneath right corner of cartoon. |
Aug-02-14
 | | WannaBe: Bigger-er Holy Sheet, <Jim Bartle> and I actually agreed on something. That Smoltz should count as a teammate. (The world will definitely end soon. =))) |
Aug-02-14
 | | perfidious: Joisey native Anthony Ranaudo gets first K, of fellow Garden Stater Derek Jeter, and first win, in Red Sox-Yankees. cha-CHING! |
| Aug-02-14 | | playground player: <Phoney> does it again... although I don't know why I didn't think of Matthewson-Ames-Wiltse or Matthewson-McGinnity-Taylor. Those NY Giants teams won a lot of championships. Incidentally, I had always thought Iron Man Joe McGinnity left the Giants because he'd burnt his arm out. But it turns out he jumped to the minor leagues because they offered him more money and no John McGraw to deal with. |
Aug-02-14
 | | Phony Benoni: So, who is the only player to get a hit off Ferguson Jenkins and Steve Carlton on the same day? http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/cutfo... |
Aug-02-14
 | | OhioChessFan: A surprising one:
Philadelphia A's, 1925-32
Eddie Rommell 85
Lefty Grove 171
Rube Wahlberg 121
Total 377
I wonder about the Mets of the 60's. I might add them up if I feel motivated. |
Aug-02-14
 | | OhioChessFan: Oh, I see <pp> already took a shot with the A's. Rommell would have contributed a lot more a few years earlier. |
Aug-02-14
 | | perfidious: Jim Thome officially hangs 'em up, signing a one-day contract with Indians. Always a credit to the game in his unpretentious way. |
Aug-02-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Hmmm. 612 home runs is probably automatic fpr the Hall of fame, but he seems one-dimensional. But then, so was Harmon Killebrew. And he we clean during the steroid era, which will count for something. |
| Aug-03-14 | | Jim Bartle: On base more than 4000 times. Wore socks high.
Every single eligible player who got on base more than Thome is in the Hall of Fame except Palmeiro, Bonds and Biggio. Biggio will make it soon. I say, first ballot. |
Aug-03-14
 | | perfidious: There was a day when <400> HRs made one a mortal lock for Cooperstown--then along came Dave Kingman, the epitome of the one-dimensional slugger. For '18, Thome gets there, as some of the eligibles who are cinches will see their way home the next three years. |
| Aug-03-14 | | playground player: Only famous players should be in the Hall of Fame.
There should be a separate facility for players whose accomplishments were based on steroid use. |
Aug-03-14
 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> I don't know about a steroid HOF. Wouldn't players be backing in? Newspapers often exaggerate the prowess of the Latest Rookie Phenom. However, this one sound about right: http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/l... |
Aug-03-14
 | | perfidious: That kid back in 1907 was not bad. |
Aug-03-14
 | | Phony Benoni: The Rockies have a strange little streak going. Today is their 19th game in a row with a left-handed starting pitcher. |
| Aug-03-14 | | Jim Bartle: Referring to Walter Johnson as a twirler seems strange. |
| Aug-03-14 | | MarkFinan: Jim. You're needed, and requested, at Nakosorense's forum. ✌ |
Aug-03-14
 | | WannaBe: Giants and Dodgers have strange home/road win&loss record. Both teams, apparently, don't like to play at home... |
Aug-04-14
 | | perfidious: And I thought icing was only penalised in hockey--shows what I know: <South Carolina self-reports impermissible icing on cookie cakes> http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoo... <----still shaking head in amazement |
Aug-04-14
 | | Phony Benoni: "And you know, our recruits, like all recruits, love the cookie cakes. And they don't have fancy icing, just good old-fashioned plain South Carolina icing. And I just want to say this right now, that regardless of what they say about it, we're gonna keep giving them out." |
