Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: Det at Pit, Verlander just don't look right... Time for MRI?!
Aug-11-14

Phony Benoni: verlander lifted after one inning; right shoulder soreness. When it rains, it pours (and we've had 4.5" so far in Detroit today).

  WannaBe: Breakin' Gnus!!

Royals are leading, and Tigers are losing.

If the scores hold up, this will be the first time that Royals are in first place this late in the season since George Brett charged out of the dugout because he found out hot-dog is $1.75 and beer is $2.50 at Kauffman stadium.

Phony Benoni: Maybe, Travis. But I'm more worried this might be a Dizzy Dean type problem.

Dean was never the same after changing his pitching motion to take pressure off a broken toe. Verlander has been battling ineffectiveness since off-season surgery, and I'm thinking he may have tweaked his motion a bit too much trying to compensate.

Verlander has problems?

Aug-12-14
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Yes, Verlander is getting an MRI on his shoulder, and finally admitting it had been bothering him for some time.

The Tigers have two other pitchers on the DL, just dropped out of first place--and now THIS:

Phony Benoni: Verlander's MRI showed no major structural damage, just inflammation from regular wear and tear. He'll miss at least one start, a first in his career.

Instead, tonight the Tigers present the beginning of the Buck Farmer Era:

You gotta root for a name like that, but I'm not hopeful. (Don't think he's related to Ed.)

If the ball hadn't touched the catcher, that would be an HBP, right?

Phony Benoni: <hangingenprise>: I have no tips to give RT on the Polish. Everything I know about that opening, I learned from Botvinnik.
Aug-15-14  Travis Bickle: Mr Benoni I just watched the Bears Jaguars exhibition game... The Bears worry me in a few area's.

#1 linebacker, they don't have real starters out there except for Lance Briggs. They have last years LB draft picks John Bostic (Florida), who's looked good & Khaseem Greene (Rutgers), but after that they are thin on depth... They are experimenting with former 1st round draft pick of a few years ago ex-DE Shea McClellin at LB on blitzing downs but he looks questionable at best.

Safety is a question mark also. The Bears signed Ryan Mundy, M.D. Jennings and Danny McCray in free agency, and selected Brock Vereen in the fourth round of the draft. They just signed veteran Adrian Wilson & also have Chris Conte who killed the playoffs for The Bears against Green Bay when he blew his coverage for 6 points the last game of the year!

Plus we have a big hole to fill at kickoff returner since they cut Devin Hester.

We got better at D-Line with signings of DE Lamar Houston from The Raiders & De Jared Allen from The Vikings, plus the Bears drafted a number 1 & a number 4 at DT so that may help the backers & safeties with a fierce pash rush.

Any thoughts on your Lions? I know pre-season football isn't your cup of tea, although you have a baseball team to watch this time of year. ; P

Phony Benoni: We're in wait-and-see mode about the Lions, Travis. Positions look pretty solid everywhere except defensive back and kicker. But the real question will be whether this team can play up to their potential, and even more importantly smart, tough football. There's a big different between "tough" and "dirty", and the Lions haven't learned it in the recent past. Whether the new coach can bring in that mentality is the what we're waiting to see.

Aug-17-14  playground player: Great Scott! Maybe if she removed those two basketballs from under her shirt, she could throw a baseball better.

WannaBe: So, talk about a run of bad luck, the game between Reds-Rockies last night was postponed, because a water main broke and the stadium had no water.

The game was then rescheduled today as a part of day-night double header.

So, of course, they are right now in a rain delay in game 1.

OhioChessFan: Per the bouncing pitch hitting a batter, while I am not sure on the rule, I never called that a hit batter since the fact it bounced contained an implied suggestion the batter didn't try to get out of the way.
