Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Gardenhire had been coaching with the Twins since 1991 before he got the manager's job, so he'd been with them nearly 25 years. He has some success and a good reputation, but four straight 90-loss seasons apparently took their toll.

He's still only 57, and surely some other team will take a shot with him.

Sep-29-14  Jim Bartle: That brings to mind A's midseason replacement Jackie Moore around 1984.

Asked if he considered himself to be an interim manager, he replied, "To my mind there are 26 interim managers."

Sep-29-14  playground player: Guys, I remember John Sterling from way back in the early 1970s. Even back then he had a talent for saying the wrong thing. He once described Felipe Alou as "a credit to his race." Aaargh! He apologized for it right away; I had a feeling that it just slipped out.

He used to get a lot of nutty calls when he did a post-game sports call-in show--including a guy who never spoke, but always just flushed the toilet.

I wonder how old he is. He's been broadcasting Yankee games for, oh, gotta be 40-plus years.

perfidious: The beginning of the Jimmy Garoppolo epoch in Foxboro? He relieves Tom Brady and throws his first career TD pass in the fourth quarter of a lost game.

After Garoppolo threw his TD pass, Brady sent him to iggydom--not that he had anyone within twenty feet of him for some time before that.

WannaBe: <perfidious> My post was very tongue in cheek, I think the game was done by half-time, if not end of the third.

But in other news, Traiders have fired Dennis Allen and hired Marcus Allen!

Okay, maybe not Marcus, but...

WannaBe: Good Gnus!! Traiders home game tickets* can be had for under 40^ dollars!!

http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/schedul...

You want to see Alex Smith? 25 bucks!! Wanna see your very own ex-QB Palmer? 28 bucks!!

^Price may be still go down, depend on how Traiders do after the bye-week. If I were you, I'd sell short.

*Except the 49ers game, where you will need to take out a second mortgage.

perfidious: Raiders are headed for another high draft pick next spring--maybe they can do something with this one and not sign retreads such as Matt Schaub. Give Derek Carr a chance to be something; might actually work out.

Phony Benoni: <hangingenprise> I'm not convince. Seahawks don't look that good this year.

Of course, the big story around here right now isn't the Lions or even the Tigers. It's U-M football, where there is a call for the Athletic Director to be fired because he hasn't yet fired the head coach.

perfidious: <PB> A long while ago, Jack Tatum theorised that in football, power drives out finesse and a rough equivalent may be made wherein teams that rely on pitching and defence and which have trouble scoring runs do not generally fare well in the postseason. Even those Braves powerhouses of the 1990s came to grief in the playoffs--one might well have expected more than one ring with that outstanding starting rotation.
Oct-01-14  Jim Bartle: A lot of teams wIth good oitching but relatively little offense have won the Series. Dodgers and Mets in the 60s, A's in the 70's, Twins in their two championships.

The 98 Yankees, the best team in many years, scored a ton of runs but also gave up by far the fewest in the AL.
