 | | WannaBe: Just heard about this on the radio, and had to look it up. https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-... So, he got fired, and (immediately) got hired/promoted for a few days. Both ex-Tigers, played together. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Gibson and Trammell are personally close, but different personalities. Gibson is explosive, Trammell quiet and accommodating. The way I read this--which may not be true--is that Gibson was told he would be let go, exploded, and let loose with a bunch of upper-case numbers to the effect that "Why don't you just fire me now?" This meant Trammell would go too, but he was willing to stick around and finish up first. Which I doubt Gibson minded. They are close. |

 | | WannaBe: We have <Phony Benoni> on suicide watch, right? |
|
Sep-27-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Why did we have to play the Twins? Every other day of the season the Tigers beat up on the Twins, but that final weekend... And those Greedy Greasy Grimy Golden Gophers took our jug, too. Not a good day. |

| Sep-28-14 | | Shams: Mariners survive! |

 | | WannaBe: We <MAY> see a triple header on Monday. If KC/DET & St.L/PIT & OAK/SEA are tied after Sunday's play. Royals at Tigers to determine Central Champion. Loser will then host Wild Card game. Winner will go to Baltimore. Seattle will host Oakland to determine second Wild Card, winner will travel to loser of KC/DET. The winner of that game then go to Anaheim.
Pirates will be at St.L to determine the NL Central Winner. The winner will go to Los Angeles, loser will host SF for Wild Card game, then the winner go to Nationals. Test Monday. |

 | | Phony Benoni: And know you know why ballboys wear helmets:
http://wapc.mlb.com/cutfour/2014/09... Can't blame him. If Miguel Cabrera hit one toward me, I'd get out of the way By Any Means Necessary. |
|
Sep-28-14
 | | Phony Benoni: And I'm rooting for the Mariners. Would definitely love to see a doubleheader on Test Monday. |
|
| Sep-28-14 | | playground player: <Esteemed Baseball Mavens> Overlooked in the hoopla attending Derek Jeter's last game was the prospect that might also have been the last game for the great Ichiro Suzuki. He would finish with 2,800+ hits--after playing the first half of his career in Japan. How many hits might he have had if he'd played his whole career here in the USA? Anyone, it all got me feeling rather nostalgic. Do any of you remember this? http://www.televisiontunes.com/Tomb... |

 | | OhioChessFan: Found it. The crowd went crazy when it happened. The video sound doesn't come close to capturing how loud the cheers were. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POL-... |

 | | perfidious: <pgp> Who knows whether someone will try to pick up Suzuki for one last go at it--seems to me that getting to 3000 hits in MLB will be a longshot, even as close as he is, but stranger things have happened. |
|
| Sep-29-14 | | Jim Bartle: Eagles yesterday:
1 TD on fumble return
1 TD on punt return
1 TD on interception return
0 TDs scored by offense |

Sep-29-14
 | | WannaBe: Right now, I. Suzuki have 2844 hits, briefly lookin' at this 2014 numbers, played in 143 games, not sure why he missed 19 games, was he hurt? (I don't follow the Yankees that closely) I do know this, he no longer bats lead-off, which will cost him an extra at-bat or two every game. 156 hits shy of 3K, need to average nearly a hit a game (if he can play 160 games, or 155 games...) Definitely not impossible, and knowing his (training) regiments I hope he does try (and a team picks him up and give him a chance, Angels? A's? Back to Seattle?) But I don't think West Coast would be good for him at this time (due to his age and amount of traveling west coast teams have to endure versus teams in the Central U.S. and East Coast) http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/mlb-...
http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9... http://sodomojo.com/2014/03/31/seat... And just maybe, game 160 of 2015, someone will 'gift' him with hit 3K and the pitcher becomes a trivia answer. =)) |
|
| Sep-29-14 | | Jim Bartle: A bigger question is whether Ichiro has been a truly great hitter (he's definitely a great outfielder), or more specifically, has his style of hitting been the best for helping his team win? He has a lot of hits but an unexceptional OBP, because he walks so little. He scored 100 runs every year, but he also made many, many outs. And he does have power, could have hit for much more power at the cost of a few points off his batting average. Would that have helped his teams? |
|
Sep-29-14
 | | perfidious: <WannaBe> If Alfonso Soriano had done anything for Yankees this year, he would have remained the right-handed half of a platoon with Suzuki and taken more AB from him; as it was, Ichiro only played as much OF as he did because Beltran's injury did not allow the latter to do more than DH. <Jim> Seems to me that some time back, I saw a piece in which the author questioned all this--believe 'selfish' or 'selfishness' was a term used. |
|
| Sep-29-14 | | Jim Bartle: Yes, I've seen opinions like that. I just wonder to what extent it's true. It goes back to the question of the relative value of batting average vs. power. |
|
Sep-29-14
 | | perfidious: <Jim> On the topic of John Sterling, here is a post from this very page from several years back, with an excerpt below: <While on the theme of Sterling, here's a classic (Hideki) Matsui HR call by the master from two years ago:'It's high, it's far, it's gone.....it's an A-bomb!' Guess he forgot that it wasn't Rodriguez at bat. This also makes one wonder how those of Japanese origin might have felt on hearing this particular call....> Phony Benoni chessforum Pompousness, John Sterling be thy name, and partner Suzyn Waldman is even worse. |
|
| Sep-29-14 | | Jim Bartle: I don't understand the Yankees' broadcasting setup between radio and TV. But I don't understand how they can use an excellent announcer such as Kay, plus good analysts like Singleton and O'Neill, along with a pompous homer like Sterling. |

 | | WannaBe: Twins fired Ron Gardenhire. So, we have Gibson and Gardenhire ax'd so far. |
|
| Sep-29-14 | | Jim Bartle: <So, we have Gibson and Gardenhire ax'd so far.> Should Gibbons, Gonzalez and Girardi be worried? |
|
Sep-29-14
 | | WannaBe: Truthfully, I don't understand why Gardenhire got fired, 13 years, small market team, you (Twin's management) know you are not going to draw top free agents like LA or NY or SF. Maybe even St.L.? Tom Kelly lasted a long time, too. But he did bring Championships to the team. Don't know the details of their ownership (maybe it have changed hands after Tom Kelly's tenure, and owners are expecting more?) Or how deep their farm systems are... Braves (F. Gonzalez), sure, I'd be worried, second half collapse, injuries to pitching staff or not. Look at Braves' second half record and maybe even the second half of their second half record, and see how many runs they managed each game. Is that pitching staff's fault? |
|
Sep-29-14
 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> A quick question in your field as an expert not on baseball, but Peru. I'm cataloging a number of books on philosophy in Latin and South America at the moment, and just hit this title: <Historia de las ideas en el Perú contemporáneo> Now, it's not hard to figure out the English translation of that. I'm just curious about the <el Peru> part. Is that simple Spanish grammar, or is there something more significant? |
|
| Sep-29-14 | | Jim Bartle: No, that's the way the country is referred to in Spanish. |
|
