Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Oct-15-14  Jim Bartle: No. I don't think any has even won two straight to reach the World Series.

Yankees went 12-2 in 1998.

Cincinnati was 7-0 in 1976.

Oct-15-14  Shams: Well, the Royals aren't wasting any time. Bottom of the first and they're on the board already. That team is just white hot.

WannaBe: <Shams>, <Jim Bartle> is correct, when it was two rounds, Cincinnati went undefeated in post-season play.

After it went three rounds, no team have swept it all. (You want to count the Wild Card game as 'round' or 'serie'?)

Oct-15-14  Shams: <WannaBe> Should they actually pull it off-- still a 16-1 shot even if they win today-- the WC game counts as "record insurance" for the Royals in case another team down the road sweeps three to win it all. That'd be my take. :)

I wonder what the Vegas odds will be for a Royals sweep of the WS.

Phony Benoni: In the original format, the Yankees swept consecutive series in 1927-1928 and 1938-1939. They also swept in 1932, giving them twelve straight wins in Series play. For consecutive years, they won the final game in 1937 for nine in a row over three years; that streak ended at 10 after the first game in 1941. No other team approaches this; in fact, no other team even swept two series in the pre-1969 era.

In the two-round play-offs, Cincinnati's 7-0 sweep in 1976 is unique.

In the three/four round formats, the following teams have had two sweeps in the postseason:

11-1: Yankees 1999, White Sox 2005 (!)

11-2: Yankees 1998

11-3: Red Sox 2004, Red Sox 2007

The only prior team to sweep both the Division and League Championships: the 2007 Rockies. So a word of caution for Royals' fans: the Rockies got swept in the World Series!

Phony Benoni: I was just remembering that incredible finishing run the Rockies had in 2007. First of all, they had to finish the season 13-1 just to get into this one-game play-off for the Wild Card spot:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Looks a bit similar to the KC - Oakland Wild Card game this year, doesn't it? Then they swept the NL play-offs to run their streak to 22-1 before crashing in the Series. They were a real Impossible Dream bunch, and it just caught up with them.

Oct-15-14  Jim Bartle: I've mentioned this before, but for sweeps look at Tony LaRussa. He managed three straight in the World Series, a win followed by two losses, bracketed by two 4-1s.

WannaBe: You mean 88, 89, 90 World Series?
Oct-15-14  Jim Bartle: The sweeps were 89, 90 and 04. The A's won one game against LA in 88.
Oct-16-14  Jim Bartle: Matt Adams flipped his bat away arrogantly after his homer in game two. He should have flipped his glove away after handing game four to the Giants by butchering two plays in a row.

Phony Benoni: Oh, the question was, "Who was the only person to play for both the New York Giants and the Kansas City Royals?"

By the way, I learned that the Royals now have the second longest play-off winning streak of all time. They won the last three games of the 1985 World Series, giving them 11 in a row.

Yo Phony, I was out on Lake Michigan yesterday afternoon trying to catch some nice size lake trout when I hooked into this guy. They still have some nice sized fish in the lake! Check out the size of this lunker! http://images.nationalgeographic.co...

P.S. He snapped my pole in half! Then he burned out my trolling motor!!

What year and who are the participants in the first 'All Wild Card World Series'?

Phony Benoni: Hmm. The home of the Giants, and Las Vegas where people actually know what's going to happen.

I think most people are indulging in wishful thinking. San Francisco is more versatile and has the edge in experience.

Oct-17-14  Jim Bartle: <What year and who are the participants in the first 'All Wild Card World Series'?>

Don't remind me!! A complete collapse.

I went to one game, got a snapshot with Mike Scioscia, Garrett Anderson tossed me a ball.
