Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Oct-18-14  Jim Bartle: I hate it when baseball announcers give their opinions based on results.

In the Giants ninth last night, the radio announcers were saying Ishikawa had to take pitches until he got a strike, because Wacha had walked the previous guy on four pitches.

Then he swung on the first strike and hit it out of the park. Then it immediately became, "What a great decision by Ishikawa, he knew he was going to get a fastball and he was ready for it."

What would you do if given the choice between receiving $10,000 or meeting your idol?

Well, the choice was simple for 16-year-old Texas high school soccer player Rhiannon Conelley.

HLN reports: "She chose to meet Neymar. Pretty remarkable that a teenager is going to pass up 10,000 bucks for a life experience."

Phony Benoni: Perhaps I have the wrong notion of teenagers, but I'd think on the whole life experiences mean more to them than money.
Oct-18-14  Jim Bartle: Joe Schmidt just intercepted a pass for Notre Dame. I thought he'd used up his eligibility long ago.

Phony Benoni: He used up his eligibility at the University of Pittsburgh. That doesn't stop you from playing at Notre Dame.

If the Irish can pull this off, we may have to start taking them seriously. By the way, how did teams from Mississippi make it into the top two spots? Is this College football or a spelling bee?

Oct-18-14  Jim Bartle: Maybe I said this before, the other Joe Schmidt made the only NFL interceptions I ever saw in person. Three against the Rams in 1957.

  Phony Benoni: This game:

http://www.pro-football-reference.c...

They also played two weeks earlier in Detroit, with the Lions winning 10-7. In that game Van Brocklin completed five passes to Rams players, six to the Lions.

He did considerably better in LA.

Oct-19-14  Jim Bartle: No, it was this one, in 1958: http://www.pro-football-reference.c... Had the year wrong.

Detroit 41 LA 24. I don't remember much more, but Wade was Ram quarterback, not van Brocklin. And I see the interception return for a TD was by Wayne Walker, not Schmidt, so maybe Schmidt didn't have three.

Walker was an extremely popular sports anchor in San Francisco for many, many years.

Phony Benoni: An 8-yard field goal? Nothing like having the posts on the goal line.

Wayne Walker got his start broadcasting in Detroit during the football offseason. Very popular, but San Francisco just offered a better opportunity.

He also served as the Lions' place kicker for many years in the 1960s. He was OK on the PATs--172 out of 175--but was atrocious on field goals, making only about 40%. In fact, his Wikipedia article notes he is rated as the worst kicker of all time. The Lions finally gave up an brought in Garo Yepremian to replace him.

Oct-19-14  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: Perhaps I have the wrong notion of teenagers, but I'd think on the whole life experiences mean more to them than money.> Well Phony, if I was in Vegas 10,000 in the hole at the crap table I'd take the cash over meeting a celebrity... ; P
Oct-19-14  playground player: I think I'd take the $10,000. My idol is Davy Crockett, and it'd be kind of unnerving to meet him.

Phony Benoni: Oh, I'd take the money too. What would I care about meeting Barack Obama or Sarah Palin or even the Dalai Lama? They'd be bored and so would I and the whole evening would be a bust.

Well, maybe if I could book Irving Chernev. I'd show him some games played since his passing and watch his eyes light up. That might be worth it.

But the fact is that we old farts have lost our capacity for hero worship. And teenagers don't yet know the real value of money, or suffered from the lack of it.

WannaBe: Whenever I take the Bears to win (e.g. today, vs Miami) they don't. When I don't pick the Bears (e.g. at 49ers) they do.

And last week I took the Rams to win vs 49ers, they lost, and today, I took Seattle to win, Rams win.

Grrrrrrrrr...

Oct-19-14  Travis Bickle: The Bears play with no intensity or organisation! It must be that nitwit Headcoach Trestman's boy scout personality! Their Defensive Coordinator Mel Tucker hasn't got a clue either. How can you lose 3 games at home and win in San Fran & Atlanta?? They can only beat bad teams... : 0

P.S. If Rex Ryan gets the axe with the Jets I'd love to see the Bears get Buddy's son Rex in control of at least the Bears defense.

Oct-19-14  Jim Bartle: All 49er fans could have warned you about Trestman, Travis. He was roundly hated as offensive coordinator in the 90s.
Oct-19-14  whiteshark: Greetings <Phony Benoni>!

I wonder if the recent F Karger vs E Paehtz, 2014 will make it as worthy no. 100 into the Game Collection: DIRP! ?

Oct-19-14  whiteshark: <Seize the DIRP!>

("carpe dirpem" as the Romans said)

Oct-19-14  Jim Bartle: The Bears might not have had too much fight on the field, but it seems they can really mix it up in the locker room.

I liked this tweet about the fight:

<Fight in Bears' locker room. Jay Cutler reportedly doing serious damage with his purse.>

WannaBe: Well, them 4th down and 9ers looked "good" against them Bozos, I mean Broncos. (As a side note, the leading rusher for the 49ers against Denver was Gore, who gained 20 yards, guess once you are behind big, it's throw, throw, throw, throw.)

One team remain without a win. When will the Traiders win a game this season. Or will they go O-fer? Remaining Schedule:

@ CLE
@ SEA
v DEN
@ SD
v KC (Thur)
@ STL
v SF
@ KC
v BUF
@ DEN

Cheapest seat at O.co Coliseum, is the Buffalo game, StubHub have tix available for $21, next one is the KC game, $22. Better buy them now, before they keep losing and the tix price drop. (It will probably be more expensive to park than to go into the game)

More interestingly, these 10 teams (League have 32 teams, so... Roughly one-third of the NFL) have not yet had an hundred yard rusher.

OAK, WAS, BUF, ARZ, STL, DET, ATL, NOR, IND, & TEN. Only 4 of them have a winning record, BUF, ARZ, DET & IND.
