Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <Because a cornerback might jump one of those passes and get a pick-six. And if the QB avoids that possibility by throwing it 20 rows into the stands, then flag him for intentional grounding.>

Or the quarterback might fumble the snap trying to spike the ball. The Next Joe Pisarcik is just waiting for his chance to shine. In fact, he may already be out there. I read that Joe Montana's son, a college quarterback, recently spiked the ball on fourth down.

But I can only repeat that I see no difference between a quarterback stopping the clock by throwing the ball at the feet of a receiver a couple of yards away, or throwing the ball at his own feet. Yes, the defense has a slightly better chance to make a play, but that's hardly an important factor.

One rule change I would consider as a result of the Lions' game, though. There was no ten-second runoff after the delay-of-game penalty because the ball was dead. I'd change that. It was blatantly unfair for a team to get a second chance because of their own penalty.

WannaBe: Well, Nick Montana started out at Univ. of Washington, then transferred to Mt. San Antonio College in SoCal. (where we just shorten it to Mt. SAC)

Young Nick is now at Tulane and yes, he did spike the ball towards the end of the first half game against Univ. of Central Florida.

Oct-28-14  Jim Bartle: In the 2002 Series SF went WLLWW. Sound familiar?

They took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th of game 6, lost, and lost game seven.

Could happen again.

WannaBe: So I looked it up, cheapest ticket for tonight, Section 402 $256, behind home plate (where that Marlins guy is) $1600

WannaBe: Okay, game 7, SRO is being offered/asking $713, that section 402 is now $773.

Coulda have made an easy $500 bucks, in theory.

Oct-28-14  Jim Bartle: Don't be so hasty. Giants could scotr a touchdown.

WannaBe: StubHub's policy on a game that is not played, you get your full money back, shipping, handling, whatever. But they don't charge that. What you see is what you pay.

So, with that in mind, I coulda bought 2 seats behind home plate, at 7:30 Eastern, if no game 7, I get full refund.

If game 7, I have just made easy 2K, in 90 minutes... No risk, what so ever. I am an idiot!!!!!!

Phony Benoni: Now they need a two-point co9nversion. Giants might face an interesting decision soon. Have a single pitcher "Take one for the team" and be unavailable for game 7, or pitch everybody for one inning and be able to use them all again tomorrow.

WannaBe: Well, since tonight is "All Hands on Deck", wouldn't surprise me if Dusty Baker puts in his 5-years old son as a pinch runner.

So, I'll go with 85.

Phony Benoni: The Royals will probably win 10-9 on a walk-off lead-off home run by second baseman Frank White.

In some respects it's been a boring series. What was the last time there was only one save in the first six games?

OhioChessFan: <Phony> yeah, not very exciting in the sense you mean. If I was a Giants fan I'd be screaming about how many 30 foot groundballs have turned into hits for the Royals.

WannaBe: At 5:43PM Eastern, cheapest seat is sectioni 412, asking $573, behind home plate (Row B) a pair can be had for $10,300, another pair is going for $16,000
