Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Travis, prepare for Small Ball at Wrigley Field, where bunts become ground rule doubles when the wind is blowing out.

WannaBe: Official scorer changes mind, Affeldt is now the winner of game 7. Bum now have the record of the longest outting for save.

(Does that mean he won't get the Chevy? And that regional manager have to make another awkward speech?)

Phony Benoni: I wonder if Gordon considered trying to steal home.

Perfect situation. Left-handed pitcher with his back to third base. Right-handed batter blocking catcher's view. Pitches are coming in high, which is worth a split second or two on the tag.

Maybe Gordon's just not that fast.

Now, if only someone can explain why that is on the finance section...

Oct-30-14  Jim Bartle: <WannaBe: Why third base coach did not send Gordon for inside the park home run:>

He would have been out by twenty feet unless the throw was wild.

The problem was Gordon didn't go full speed from the start.

Phony Benoni: Word is out that Michigan's Athletic Director will resign today,, which means that head football coach Brady Hoke will be soon to follow, though he might coach out the string.

You knew it was getting serious when candidates for the University of Michigan Board began running on a platform of restoring excellence to the football field.

Oct-31-14  Jim Bartle: How did Michigan sink so fast, after being a perennial top 10-15 team for 40 years?

Phony Benoni: Many feel it started with the death of Bo Schembechler, but that seems an overly sentimental view.

What seems to have happened is that they made two bad choices for head coach. FIrst they brought in a run-and-gun coach in Rich Rodriguez when they hadn't recruited run-and-gun players. Then Brady Hoke, who turned out not to be up to the job in the long run.

Two bad coaching hires reflect on the AD

Frankly, even in their glory years I always had the feeling that Michigan was overrated. That bad bowl record was no accident.

WannaBe: Well, the ex-AD came over from Dominos Pizza, mote of a corporate mind set than campus...
Oct-31-14  Jim Bartle: I remember thinking that it seemed odd when Michigan hired Rodriguez, even though I knew he was a successful coach. It just didn't seem to be a good fit.

The reason Michigan didn't do too well in bowl games for a long time was that the Big Ten played power football back then, and were often exposed when they played good teams with passing attacks.

I remember walking out of the stadium after Stanford upset undefeated Michigan in the 1972 Rose Bowl 13-12. Two Michigan fans were trying to figure out how it was possible they'd lost. I decided to be a jerk and told them that other teams had learned it was legal to throw the ball through the air.

Stanford hired Buddy Teevens, a Florida assistant, about ten years ago, and it was immediately clear he just didn't relate well to Stanford athletes. He was gone in two years. They tried another guy who didn't do well, then struck gold with Harbaugh, a former Palo Alto High QB.

Phony Benoni: Guy on 6:00 sports hit the nail on the head, I think. In the last three years, the value of the Michigan football program has dropped from $120 million to $104 million. Bingo!

One of the Harbaughs has been mentioned as the new coach; I can never remember which is which. Also Les Miles from LSU, who would be a link back to the Schembechler days and was mentioned for the last two vacancies. Whoever it is, I'm sure they'll go Big Time.
