Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Teenage Mutant NJIT Basketball?
Dec-06-14  Jim Bartle: Yale beat UConn, too. An Ivy League team beat the defending national champion.
Dec-06-14  Jim Bartle: Is this a typo? Ohio State 38 Wisconsin 0, halftime.

Phony Benoni: Maybe they've been using the wrong quarterback after all..

Still, I don't think they can make the playoffs if Florida State wins. Style points are fine, but undefeated is undefeated.

Dec-06-14  Jim Bartle: Excuse me, 45-0.

Phony Benoni: And 59-0 final. I think they made their point. And Florida State barely won, as usual.

It doesn't matter how many teams play off for the national championship. There will never be enough slots.

Dec-07-14  positionalgenius: <PB> You don't think four is enough slots? Looks pretty clear to me who the top 3 are this year.

Phony Benoni: <positionalgenius> Fine. But they still have to pick four, with several candidates for that last spot.
Dec-07-14  Jim Bartle: The top thre are Florida State, Alabama, and Oregon?

OhioChessFan: <PB> however many slots, there is going to be an argument for who gets the last one. I agree with <pg> that 3 slots are no brainers, Bama, Oregon, and FSU, although I think there is <no way> FSU is one of the four best teams in the country. They'll get blasted in the playoffs anyway.

How about a what if? What if there weren't 4 making it? Would you leave FSU home at 13-0? I haven't heard anybody suggest anyone other than Bama and Oregon should be 1 and 2. If they'd stay home in a field of two, even undefeated, why is it understood they can't stay home in a field of four?

As for who gets in, I think TCU gets the 4th spot, although I think OSU should.

OhioChessFan: <NJIT pulled off its upset over Michigan without perhaps its best player, Terrence Smith, who is recovering from an undisclosed injury that has held him out thus far this season.>

Unbelievable.

Dec-07-14  Jim Bartle: An undefeated team from a major conference, or an independent playing a tough schedule, absolutely should be in a national championship game, unless there are more than two undefeated teams.

Scores don't matter; results matter. 37-35 and 58-0 are the same: wins.

WannaBe: Here are some of the break downs of the teams in discussion:

(Rankings of the opponent are as of the week the game was played.)

FSU: Played 4 ranked teams this year. Highest ranked played was Notre Dame #5, game was at FSU, and won by 4. Of course, we all know what happened to ND.

Oregon: Played 4 ranked teams this year. Highest was #7 Mich. State, then #7 Arizona at Pac-12 Championship game. Lost to (then) unranked Arizona <AT HOME> after a bye-week. (Non-Conference schedule was South Dakota, Michigan State, Wyoming)

Ohio State: Played 3 ranked teams this year. Highest was #8 Mich. State, but lone loss was <AT HOME> to unranked Virg. Tech in week 2 by 14 points. (Non-conference schedule was @Navy, Virginia Tech, Kent State, Cincinnati)

Baylor: Played 3 ranked teams this year. #9 TCU and #9 Kansas State, lone loss was <AT> unranked West Virginia by 14 pts. (Non-conference schedule was SMU, Northwestern St, and @Buffalo U.)

TCU: Played 5 ranked teams, highest played was #4 Oklahoma (at home), lone loss was <AT> #5 Baylor by 3 pts. (Non-conference schedule was Samford, Minnesota, @SMU).

Alabama: Played 6 ranked teams, highest played was #1 Miss. St (at home), lone loss was <AT> Ole Miss by 6 pts.

I'd take TCU as my fourth team, make Alabam #1, Oregon #2 FSU #3 TCU #4

Dec-07-14  Jim Bartle: Apparently there's a rule in the Big 12 that says if two teams tie for the conference championship, the team which won the game between the two becomes the national representative, the one eligible for the national championship playoff.

Naturally Baylor is claiming this means they are the candidate team, not TCU.

Dec-07-14  Jim Bartle: I hate most of the new terminology in sports. I'm just beginning to accept that receivers get "separation," instead of getting "open." Now I'm hearing about receivers' "catch radius," which just means how good they are at catching non-optimum passes. (Known colloquially as "Eli" passes.)

WannaBe: Rams @ Skins, cheapest tix on StubHub is $5.

Colts @ Browns, cheapest tix is $4.

So, for a price of a hot dog, you get to see a game!! (Parking sold separately)

Phony Benoni: I'd pay $5 to see the Rams play, just for the suspense. Will they be world beaters or stink up the joint?

They're the Virgil Trucks of the NFL. (Let's see if <JB> gets my drift.)

Phony Benoni: Well, it's set. Alabama vs. Ohio State, Oregon against Florida State.

The cries are already coming that TCU and Baylor got "snubbed". I hate the word. It implies a personal favoritism not based on facts. But in today's world if you don't get picked, you get snubbed.

One school of thought is that the Committee was sick of deciding between TCU and Baylor that they figured it was just easier to leave them both out.

I think everybody was looking forward to betting the over between Oregon and either TCU or Baylor. It might have been set at 100.

I don't see any real reason that the expected won't happen, and Alabaama beat Oregon in the title game. But I'm not betting against FSU. Magic is magic, and Oregon can be vulnerable.

Phony Benoni: Considering the Rams are under .500 despite defeating both of last season's Super Bowl teams, I was thinking of the year that Virgil Trucks went 5-19 while pitching two no-hitters.
