Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: Knicks and how Bradley liked his ball flat...

http://yahoo.thepostgame.com/blog/t...

I am waiting for the SF Giants & Tiger to come out and say they deflated the baseballs and golf balls too.

Jan-29-15  Deus Ex Alekhina: Supposedly Tom Brady has tiny little doll hands, like Kristen Wiig on SNL, that's why he likes the balls to look like shriveled prunes. Gisele's not complaining however.

It's all about who he resembles:

<FALL RIVER, Mass. -- The 18 New England residents sitting on the jury in the murder trial of former Patriots star Aaron Hernandez will be allowed to watch the home team play in Sunday's Super Bowl, but the judge overseeing the case says they must leave the room if his name is mentioned.>

You're telling me there isn't a one in ten chance Seattle blows them out? I'll take that action.

Phony Benoni: You know, I get the feeling that DeflateGate won't be what people are talking about tomorrow.

I don't like to criticize coaches and other such authorities. Certainly they know better what's going on than I do. But throwing that pass on the goal line was stupid, stupid, stupid.

Feb-01-15  Jim Bartle: Going wayyyy back...

In the 1986 Orange Bowl, undefeated Miami was driving in the last 30 seconds, trailing 14-10 to Penn State. They were at the five, and back Alonzo Highsmith had been running strong.

But Vinny Testaverde wanted to be the hero, throw the winning pass, and he threw an interception.

chancho: The Patriots were making most of the mistakes and looked to be headed to defeat.

But that pass by Seattle was far worse than anything the Pats did.

I agree, it was amazingly stupid.

But, I'm glad they did it. :-))

Phony Benoni: Just saw an interview with Pete Carroll. He made two points. First, with the match-ups on the field, a pass made sense since the Patriots had just brought in their big goal-line unit.

second, he noted that Seattle had three plays left, and with only one time-out a second-down pass was the best option to get all three in. Had they run on second down and not made it, they would have had to rush one of the remaining plays. By passing, an incompletion stops the clock and both remaining plays can be run without haste.

He gave credit to the New England player for making a "championship play" to win the game rather than castigating his own strategy as bad. Did seem a bit deflated, though.

And that's why I don't like to criticize coaches who have to figure this out in the heat of the moment. He certainly had a better handle on the situation than i did, and I can understand his reasoning.

Feb-02-15  Jim Bartle: It was a fantastic catch on the interception. Plus the other CB didn't let the second receiver cut off the guy who made the interception. Wilson made a bad pass, a little behind no chance of an interception.

But not the right matchup? The Pats could have lined up 7 Joe Greenes and the matchups were right for a run.

Also, the interception has drowned out talk of other plays. For example, how in the world did Seattle oine up a linebacker one-on-one on the outside against Gronkowski? That can't happen. Brady flipped an easy TD to him.

tpstar: I was glad to see the game decided on the field, instead of some controversial referee call. Had Seattle made that goal-line pass, everyone would be praising their strategy, but since it failed, now we can all second guess it.

The announcers went way out of their way to even mention the "deflate" word, which made for comical interviews. "Given what's happened over the last two weeks, ..."

Katy Perry was awesome!

We may all be thankful.

As many have, from the get-go.

<Katy Perry is awesome!>

Fixed.

Feb-03-15  Jim Bartle: Did anyone notice how they finessed the "I Kissed a Girl" problem? It was a hit, it was tough to leave out, but also tough to sing to Middle America.

So they had her sing it with a boy (Kravitz), and at full volume, taking the sting out of it.

Phony Benoni: You mean I was supposed to watch the halftime show? With reruns of Green Acres showing on a nearby network? That's asking a lot.

Seattle wasted a couple of timeouts during the final drive due to play clock issues. They could have used an extra own down on the goal line.

After long consideration, I don't think the Lions can get there without a complete culture change, including their name. "Lions" just has too much baggage. For example, there are still some good bird names available:

Feb-03-15  Jim Bartle: I went to one of the corporate tent parties the morning of the 1985 game at Stanford. Outside the stadium we saw a ticket lying on the ground, but everyone treated it like dynamite, wouldn't touch it.

There were tickets being sold for face value, though: $60. Too rich for me.
