| Feb-12-15 | | Jim Bartle: I think the team they beat in the US final, with Mon'e Davis, was also largely black. The people I think were cheated the most were the three or four kids who actually lived in the district who got bumped to let the ringers on the team. |

 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> I think all the kids on that JRW team got cheated, by the unethical adults. |
|
| Feb-12-15 | | Jim Bartle: Right. Of course.
Looks like the entire Chicago establishment is lining up behind the team. |

 | | WannaBe: Here is the story, turns out JRW decided to redraw the boundary of its district and did not consult with others... <Here’s what happened: Kids from around Chicagoland joined JRW. A man named Chris Janes, who runs a league that lost a game 43-2 against JRW, complained to Little League International that the team used players from outside its boundaries. Little League investigated, found that JRW redrew the boundaries without consulting nearby leagues and stripped it of the 2014 U.S. title. In a statement, Little League president Stephen Keener said: “As painful as this is, we feel it a necessary decision to maintain the integrity of the Little League program.”> http://sports.yahoo.com/news/little... |
|
| Feb-12-15 | | Jim Bartle: Not saying it's so, but it's possible the boundaries were "gerrymandered," using knowledge of where the best players lived. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <td> Bernie William, Jorge Posada, and Andy Pettitte? With all due respect--and they certainly deserve a great deal--that seems to be lowering the standards a bit. Or maybe they just wanted to get everyone else out of the way before Jeter's number goes up. If this keeps up, there will come a time when you won't need a scorecard to identify the Yankees' players. you'll need a calculator. (Do they stil sell scorecards?) On the other hand, it means something to have such a problem. |

| Feb-24-15 | | playground player: Speaking of Yankees, here's something that jumped out at me from the Baseball Encyclopedia. Norwegian-born catcher Art Jorgens played 11 seasons for the Yankees, 1929-1939. During that period, the Yanks were in the World Series 5 times. In all those World Series games, Art Jorgens did not appear once. Nope, not once. Seems kind of mean, doesn't it? |

 | | WannaBe: Here's an interesting study done by ESPN on how Major League (baseball, hockey, football, basketball) teams use analytics, or a lack of analytics: http://espn.go.com/espn/feature/sto... You can click on "Overall Top 10" or "Overall Bottom 10" for a combined view of the 4 leagues. Or click on the individual sport to see how the teams are ranked. L.A. Flakers are virtually bottom... |
|
| Feb-24-15 | | Jim Bartle: Analytics just means more sophisticated use of stats, right? Certainly valuable but can be overused, and some of today's writers using analytics are unbearable. Michael Lewis wrote an article on Houston's use of analytics a couple of years, focusing on Shane Battier's defense. I thought it went way, way too far, as they calculated their chances of winning after each play. It was interesting in the way it showed exactly where Battier needed to move Bryant on the floor for the greatest chance he would miss or couldn't make a good pass (small joke). What bothers me is how the coach and front office keep the players from thinking too much rather than just playing basketball. If they're always thinking what the numbers say is the best play, it will just keep them from playing their best. |
