Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: Me thinkth, the 'best game' today is the Braggin' Right Fight for Kansas, Wichita St/Kansas.

You can throw out that #7/#2 seed out the good ol' window. Vegas line have it between a Pick and KU -1 http://www.vegasinsider.com/college...

Mar-22-15  Jim Bartle: I love it when the "big" local university refuses to play the "little brother," then is forced to in the NCAA tournament.

I believe, for example, Kentuckey refused to play Louisville for many years, even after Louisville had won a national title.

WannaBe: Univ. of Iowa have no such problem, they played both Iowa State and Northern Iowa, (lost to both, on back-to-back games) UNI and ISU did not play each other this year.

And all 3 made the tournament this year. (With ISU going out in the first game they played...)

Mar-22-15  Jim Bartle: That's the right way to do it.

Just checked. Kentucky didn't play Louisville between 1922 and 1983, after Louisville crushed UK in the 1983 NCAAs. I think that regular season game was the arrival of Rex Chapman, who went crazy in the win.

Ucla lost at home to Zaga (Game 6? Game 7?) when season first began.

Mar-22-15  Jim Bartle: Pac-12 has gone 7-1, and the loss was 72-65 to #1 Wisconsin.

Tabanus: <PB> For US Open 1942: Dallas Morning News 1 Jan. 1940 p. 14 (chess column) gives the full name of C. Rosenfield: Clarence Rosenfield. "He is one of this city's outstanding players." Also full name in Dallas Morning News 24 Aug. 1942: "Horowitz beat Clarence Rosenfield."

WannaBe: Some random thoughts for the Sweet 16: (Not to be taken seriously...)

W.Virg/Kentucky, the battle of the hill-billys?

I'll watch this game, just to see how many times Ms Judd is shown on TV.

Wichita St/ND, better watch this game, you may see 9 white players on the floor.

Ucla/Zaga, rematch of Dec 13th game at Pauley, where Ucla lost by 13. (Zags at the time was ranked #9 in AP)

Utah/Duke, see Wich St/ND.

Again, not to take (any of) my comment(s) seriously...

WannaBe: Number 6 is very interesting, http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/p...

However, what would make the reverse scenario work? E.g. Offense have 1st and 10 from the 1 yd line, defence jumps off-side to anticipate the snap/sack.

Half the distance to goal would be nothing...

Mar-23-15  Jim Bartle: In my first two years at college, the team had three black players. One was the best on the team (but not that good really) and the other two were good enough to play but not stars in any way.

One of those two told me, just watch, Chuck (the other black player) and I will never be on the court together. There will never be more than two blacks at a time, Griffin and one of us. I started watching and it was true.

The coach was a dinosaur named Howie Dallmar who was sort of an institution. They finally got rid of him, but it took a while to find a good replacement.

Mar-23-15  Jim Bartle: He had been an All-American at Stanford, but was uninspiring as coach. Couldn't win at the end with local hero Rich Kelley, though they did beat UCLA the last year.

Mar-24-15  playground player: <Esteemed Baseball Mavens> I give you now Boom-Boom Beck, a forgotten pitcher of the 1930s, who had a really cool nickname. The Wikipedia article tells you how he got it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boom-B...

I remember a time Dave Righetti, then pitching with the Yankees, was so frustrated at being taken out of a game (because he was pitching badly) that he threw the baseball completely out of the park. I think that was at County Stadium in Milwaukee; I don't have time to look it up.

Phony Benoni: Poor guy's career spanned 22 seasons (1924-1945), but he played on only two winning teams (44 Tigers, 45 Pirates), and didn't stick around after the war.

perfidious: Of course, Beck only pitched in twelve seasons over that span and most of his teams were terrible.
