 | | keypusher: <WannaBe: How much taxes you think NFL will pay? Zero after the accountants are done with forms?> It's really much ado about nothing. The franchises, which is where the money is, have always been for-profit and have always paid taxes. |

 | | WannaBe: Usually the attendance number is right under the game time on ESPN.com and MLB.com box score. I can't find the attendance number for that Baltimore game earlier. Guess MLB don't want a big-fat zero as official number. Feel sad, that had to happen, and the circumstances under which it occurred. |
|
| Apr-30-15 | | Jim Bartle: Curious: The Baltimore game was 8-2, but took only 2:03. |
|
Apr-30-15
 | | Phony Benoni: They probably didn't have the 7th inning stretch. |
|
| Apr-30-15 | | Jim Bartle: The O's first baseman did flip the ball into the stands at the end of innings. |

 | | WannaBe: And TB takes Winston with the first pick. Wonder what is <Mating Net>'s take on this choice. |
|

 | | Phony Benoni: If I were Marcus Mariotta ... well, then I would probably be disappointed. But he shouldn't be unhappy at not playing for a team with the poor judgment to pick Winston. Not that Mariotta is likely to do any better.
I'll probably be in bed long before they get to the Lions at #23. Will probably pick a lineman, going for substance over flash. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Jameis Winston #1. I'm not seeing it. At all. Most the experts do, so........ |

 | | WannaBe: We got A. Cooper WR, but who will be the one throwing the ball to him? |
|
Apr-30-15
 | | Phony Benoni: Yes, A. Cooper should be very popular with Raiders fans: http://abcnewsradioonline.com/stora... |

 | | WannaBe: Lions traded their 1st round pick to Denver!?! |
|
Apr-30-15
 | | WannaBe: Oh, Lions traded down, same thing SF <-> SD did. |
|
Apr-30-15
 | | Phony Benoni: Lions traded #23 pick for Denver's #28, fifth round this year and next, and Manny Ramirez. Boy, somebody is loading up for the annual intrasquad softball game. |

 | | keypusher: <PB>, <OCF> Why don't y'all see Jameis Winston at #1? I don't know enough to have an opinion. |
|

 | | Phony Benoni: <keypusher> Winston himself has had character issues, including several run-ins with the law. I've seen enough such players go bust to worry. But, in general, I don't think a team picking #1 should take a quarterback. Unless a team has traded down or had a freakishly bad year, a team picking #1 will have significant problems that taking a quarterback will not address. Such teams generally destroy rookie quarterbacks rather than being saved by them. To my mnd, a team should consider picking a quarterback if they are an average team with mediocre quarterback play. Somebody like, say, the Browns. |

 | | keypusher: <But, in general, I don't think a team picking #1 should take a quarterback.> The thinking, I guess, is that a shot at a true franchise quarterback doesn't come along very often, and if you get one you can't pass it up. If it works (Peyton Manning with the Colts) great. If it doesn't, well I guess David Carr with the Texans is an example of the kind of ruination you're talking about. |
|
| May-01-15 | | Jim Bartle: Tim Couch? Ryan Leaf? Steve Spurrier? |
|
May-01-15
 | | keypusher: <Jim Bartle: Tim Couch? Ryan Leaf? Steve Spurrier?> I think the issue with Couch and Leaf was that they turned out to be not that good. While the book on Carr seems to be that he had genuine talent, but just took too much of a beating in his early years. So he seemed to fit better with Phony's thesis. I can't speak to Spurrier's talent, but for whatever reason he went to the 49ers, not a terrible team. |

<I can't speak to Spurrier's talent, but for whatever reason he went to the 49ers, not a terrible team.> Thinking about this a little further, the funny thing is that Spurrier's rival, Bob Griese, went to a legitimately terrible team, spent a few years running for his life, changed coaches, won a couple of Super Bowls, and wound up in the Hall of Fame. I looked up the 1967 draft. My recollection was that Spurrier and Griese went ##1-2, but in fact the top pick was Bubba Smith, and the second was Clint Jones (who?). Then came Spurrier and Griese. |

 | | WannaBe: Last night on ESPN's Draft coverage:
NEW YORK -- Quarterbacks drafted 1-2 in the same year of the NFL draft since 1967: 1971-Jim Plunkett, Stanford, by New England, and Archie Manning, Mississippi, by New Orleans. 1993-Drew Bledsoe, Washington St., by New England, and Rick Mirer, Notre Dame, by Seattle. 1998-Peyton Manning, Tennessee, by Indianapolis, and Ryan Leaf, Washington St., by San Diego. 1999-Tim Couch, Kentucky, by Cleveland, and Donovan McNabb, Syracuse, by Philadelphia. 2012-Andrew Luck, Stanford, by Indianapolis, and Robert Griffin III, Baylor, by Washington. |

 | | WannaBe: Carolina Panthers drafted a kid out of U. Of Michigan, D. Funchess. Wonder what is the kid's Rating. |
|
| May-01-15 | | Jim Bartle: Spurrier had some very good games and was certainly not a classic bust, though of course Griese was much better. The problem was the 49ers already had a great quarterback, John Brodie, but didn't realize it yet. I know the Dolphins had decided to pick Griese over Spurrier and were prepared to accept a storm of abuse from fans in Florida. Then the 49ers took Spurrier ahead of them and got them off the hook. |
