| May-04-15 | | Jim Bartle: Yogi Berra was fired by the Yankees after 16 games in 1985. |
|
May-04-15
 | | Phony Benoni: I can get it down to 17 (Bill Norman, Tigers, after starting 2-15 in 1959), but no lower. Almost sure there was one something like 0-9, but can't find it. |

 | | WannaBe: I don't know how y'all feel about this 'Player to be Named Later', I think it's silly as heck. At least some adjustment will be made, as far as rookies go.

 | | WannaBe: <Phony> Here's the list/name that you're thinkin': D. Lopes 3-12 (2002)
C. Ripkin Sr. 0-6 (1988)
P. Garner 0-6 (2002)
Musta been a heck of a bad year in 2002... |
|
May-04-15
 | | Phony Benoni: Knew there wefe some ohfers in there. I suppose I was suppressing the memory of Phil Garner, but should have looked at Baltimore 1988, since they started 0-21. I even had a vague notion that Frank Robinson was involved. |
|
May-05-15
 | | keypusher: Yes, I was about to mention Cal Ripken Sr. but the rabbit was too fast. I was living in DC back then, and I sure did feel bad for him (not the rabbit). |

 | | Penguincw: Man, so many interesting stories in MLB last night, including TB outhitting Boston 8-5 (and losing 2-0), Bartolo Colon now having the honour of beating the Orioles with 7 different teams, and the Angels setting a sombrero record (not to mention the debut of Carlos Perez). |
|
May-06-15
 | | Phony Benoni: Colon's record is interesting, but slightly cheapened by expansion and interleague play. Elias' piece on this: http://espn.go.com/espn/elias
points out three pitchers from the "Eight-Team" era who beat teams with six different clubs. To my mind, that's also amazing, especially by bobo Newson, who "Six-timed" two different teams. On the other hand, teams played each other more frequently in those days, so a pitcher had more chances to face each club. |
|
| May-06-15 | | Jim Bartle: Wasn't there a long period where inter league trades were prohibited? That would really limit a pitcher's ability to play for more teams. |

|
| May-06-15 | | Stevie King: Do you guys think Roy "Doc" Halladay belongs in the Hall? |
|
May-06-15
 | | Phony Benoni: <Stevue King> I'd put Halladay in the second tier. Not a first ballot guy, but a contender over the long haul. Only 203 wins over 16 years due to injury problems, but Three 20-win seasons and two with 19 wins. His .659 winning percentage is in the Top-20 lifetime. Consistently among the top five in the Cy Young balloting, showing consistency in his era. But he doesn't really stand out. Much will depend on the competition. |
|
| May-06-15 | | Jim Bartle: Halladay's record is pretty similar to Schilling's, and he's stuck at 29%. Then again, maybe Halladay is a Democrat and won't be handicapped as a Republican the way Schilling is. |
|
May-06-15
 | | Phony Benoni: I bet he'll go a little higher, as Post-Season No-Hitter beats Bloody Sock any day. Remember how Don Larsen always used to get some votes? |

Jonathan Broxton is still in the league?!!? |
|
| May-07-15 | | Stevie King: PB,
I think Halladay pretty much dominated his era, not just consistent. |
|
| May-07-15 | | Jim Bartle: Took a look at Halladay's record. A lot better than I thought, outstanding for ten years starting in 2002. |
|
May-07-15
 | | Phony Benoni: Halladay will be eligible on the 2019 ballot:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/a... Looking at just the first-timers, Mariano Rivera is a first-time lock, and Andy Pettitte will probably get more consideration than Halladay. (Perhapse unfair, but 255 wins and being a long-time Yankee will do that for you.) However, outside of perhaps Todd Helton (who will suffer the Colorado Discount), I see little other competition in that particular year. |

 | | Penguincw: < Stevie King: Do you guys think Roy "Doc" Halladay belongs in the Hall? > As a Blue Jays fan, it's a definite yes for me. Adding to what <PB> said, he threw a perfect game, and has also won the Cy Young Award in both leagues, one of only 5 pitchers to do so. Who are the other 4 pitchers? They are Clemens, Johnson, Martinez and Perry, who are all Hall of Famers (except for Clemens, of course). Speaking of Hall of Fame, I remember some time ago, I had a debate with a friend, which was: why Mark McGwire should be in the HOF. I'm guessing he's not in there due to the use of PEDs, but at the same time, baseball at the time was "dead", and his battle with Sosa definitely increased attention (despite me liking baseball more than other sports, I'll be the first to admit baseball is the "worst" out of the 4 major leagues). Also, what did Rose ever do? Why isn't he in the HOF? Sure, he gambled on a bunch of games, but where is the harm in that? But again, I didn't start watching baseball 'till a couple of years ago, so I don't really know. And for the record, these are not rhetorical questions. |
|
May-08-15
 | | WannaBe: <Penguincw> Probably the very First Commandment of baseball (maybe even the zero-th), is you do not bet on baseball while you're involved. You don't bet on other teams and you DEFINITELY don't bet on your own team that you are managing. (Major conflict of interest & integrity...) You just don't do it. (pretty much the bottom line =) A friend of mine, who works at the front office of Giants, can't even participate in MLB sponsored "Beat the Streak" game. But my friend can stuff the All-Star game ballot box from 5 different devices and vote for every single Giants every day. Go Fig... |
|
| May-08-15 | | Jim Bartle: A manager betting on his own team can still manage his pitching staff according to which games he's bet on. |
