Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

OhioChessFan: It is mind blowing to me that 91% of Cincinnati Reds fans think Pete should be in the HOF. No. No. No. No. No. No.
May-09-15  Shams: <OCF> What surprises me lately are the Patriots apologists. That team had a historically low fumble rate and I think it's pretty obvious now why. How is that not big-time cheating?
May-09-15  Jim Bartle: Let's go further back. Why in the world are teams allowed to provide their own balls? They should play with the ones the league provides.

WannaBe: You know how to solve that deflate-the-football problem? Use 1 ball. Punt, kick-off, FG, what ever, and both teams must use the same ball. (Think basketball)

If it goes into the stands, send your 6'5" linebackers to retrieve it. I want to see a fan that refuses. Hello ESPN high-lights.

May-09-15  Shams: <JB> <Let's go further back. Why in the world are teams allowed to provide their own balls?>

Apparently, because the Patriots lobbied the league to allow it. I'm not making this up.

WannaBe: <Shams> Well, both Brady and P. Manning lobbied for it...

And Manning ain't saying much: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/1...

May-09-15  Jim Bartle: Here's a triple play you haven't seen before: 4-5-4.

http://m.mlb.com/news/2015/05/09/12...

Everybody looks confused. The third baseman starts to run off the field before throwing to second.

WannaBe: Just noticed, that lawyer guy who is Miami Marlins fan, is behind home plate tonight. For the Mia/SFG game.

(That giy who was at World Series games last year with Miami gears)

Kinda hard to see at first, since both teams have orange as part of team colours...

Phony Benoni: <OCF> My main problem with the Deflategate Affair is not that the Patriots may have cheated, but that they seem to have been singled out simply because they are the Patriots. You want to tell me that other NFL teams are too dumb to figure out that tampering with the football can be used to their advantage? But there is no scandal elsewhere, because nobody else has been checked. Or, if they have, I've not hear about it.

That's not to excuse the Patriots' actions. I would just like to know that their accusers are clean as well. Hypocrisy bugs me more than anything.

WannaBe: There's another one of them weird spin on the ball Colon hit a squibbed ball, it was foul, but came back fair, Cabrerra picked it up and stepped on first for the easy out...

Second time this year I seen a ball landed foul and came back fair.

WannaBe: That's got to be the worst behind the back flip attempt I have ever seen, runner took second, on the E4, then scored on a single. 1-1 KC-Det.
May-10-15  Jim Bartle: The score of tonight's Clips-Houston game was 44-44 at one time, which reminded me of something odd which almost occurred in 1969.

Going into the last four games #44 Aaron and #44 McCovey were tied with 44 homers apiece. McCovey ruined it by hitting his 45th in the 159th game.

And there's the pitch.

May-11-15  Deus Ex Alekhina: Hey Phony, I think you don't play in tournies anymore (neither do I), but do you visit them? There's a 3 day tourney at the Adoba (Hyatt) near Fairlane Town Center Dearborn, easily accessible by bus. I might drop by Sat or Sun or both, to watch. You will know me by my impression of a former Cubs announcer, if you happen to show up.

May-11-15  Jim Bartle: <DEA > I've always been curious. What exactly does an impression of Steve Stone sound like?
May-11-15
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Steve Stibe siybds like Harry Caray with a sore arm.

<DEA> No place in Detroit is easily accessible by bus on the weekend. But I wouldn't come in any event. I did play at the Michigan Open last year, and was sidelined for three weeks afterward with a bad cold. My medical conditions make it imperative that I avoid crowds, even those at a chess tournament. I tested that and found out the hard way, and won't be doing it again.

On the bright side, I have an excuse not to go the University Commencement any more. That was hell, especially in the days when I was taking a diuretic.

May-11-15  Jim Bartle: Stibe was very popular with Giants' fans for his two years there. I don't know why they traded him.

They apparently thought Tom Bradley would be a bigtime starter, so they traded Stibe and Ken Henderson for him. Henderson had been a good outfielder for several years, the third man in Mays-Bonds-Henderson, but Bonds-Maddox-Matthews was taking over.

May-12-15  Jim Bartle: Here's a problem which could occur:

Tampa Bay has complicated rules concerning balls hitting a catwalk around the roof. Some balls do remain in play.

Last night a ball to deep left hit a catwalk, dropped to shortstop for an out.

Now suppose this happens when there are men on first and second with less than two out. The umpires aren't quick enough to call an infield fly. Or they decide the ball wasn't 'easily handled.'

A quick-thinking infielder could drop the ball and get a double play, or of course if the runners were moving, get a double or triple play. A tough situation.

Phony Benoni: First of all, I can't imagine calling "infield Fly" on a play like that. Any infielder would have to be lucky to have such a carom come anywhere near him.

Also, it's hard to tell, but I think the shortstop caught the ball in short left field. If the runners are half awake, the defense isn't going to get a double play off a drop. And if the runners aren't half awake, they deserve to get thrown out.
