Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

May-12-15  Jim Bartle: Rules question: in last night's Dodger game, runners on first and third one out. Long drive to right, nice catch. Runner on third comes trotting home. RF doubles runner off first just before other runner touches home. No run.

If the runner had crossed home before the out at first, would the run have counted?

Phony Benoni: Looks like the run would count in that case. Rule 4.09 (b) states that a run is scored when a runner touches all four bases legally before three outs are recorded, exceptions being if the batter fails to reach first or a runner is forced out. Being caught off base is not a force, so always hustle on a sacrifice fly.

Throws the eephus.

Reaction: What a freakin' time to graduate, employment for newly grads are at an all-time low. I hope he doesn't have a huge student debt to pay off.

Maybe he should try grad school, and then see if the job market improves in a couple of years.

<Today is the anniversary of the start of two of the longest hitting streaks in MLB history. Joe DiMaggio's fabled 56-game streak began on May 15, 1941. That came 30 years to the day after Ty Cobb set his then-modern-MLB record of 40 straight games with a hit.>

Phony Benoni: Another sign that baseball may be getting too statisticated. Last night, when Miguel Cabrera hit his 399th home run, the big lead story here in Detroit -- in Detroit, mind you -- was that he had tied Andres Galarraga for most home runs by a Venezuelan-born player.

It was this evening before someone finally pointed out that he had also tied Al Kaline.

Keep it relevant, guys!

May-16-15  Jim Bartle: I noticed Cards catcher Yadier Molina appeared to congratulate Cabrera after his 400th.

keypusher: <playground player: Just wondering--what percentage of MLB players are Latino, nowadays? And how many of them never heard of Al Kaline?>

About 25% I think.

I would imagine only a fraction of active players, Latino or non-, would know who Al Kaline was. I read somewhere that Vince Coleman was being interviewed in the 1980s and it became clear he had no idea who <Jackie Robinson> was.

I'll bet many of us kibitzers here know more chess history than all but a tiny fraction of GMs. They've got more than enough to think about without trying to figure out stuff like whether the 1909 Lasker-Janowski match was for the world title.

keypusher: It's funny, Kaline wound up on opposite sides of two milestones: 3,007 hits but 399 home runs.
May-17-15  Jim Bartle: 170 assists. I suspect many more didn't even try to run on him.
May-17-15  Jim Bartle: I was looking at Kaline record and noticed the Tigers were second in the majors (behind Cincinnati) in 1968 with 671 runs. That's not much offence.

In 1969 twelve teams scored more runs. The smaller strike zone and lower mound were probably the main reasons, but the addition of the Pilots and the Expos helped as well.

I did get to see Kaline hit a home run against the A's in 1968, helping McLain win his 18th.
