Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jun-14-15  Jim Bartle: And there was only one substitution in that game, a pinch hitter in the ninth. I assume there have been many games with no subs, but probably not for quite a few years.

OhioChessFan: <I was wondering if a batter hits a single, but the runner on 3rd trips and falls and there's a force out at the plate, would that count?>

No. It's not a single if all forced runners don't safely advance a base.

keypusher: <As a practical matter, 27 wouldn't be totally impossible; there are any number of common ways to get three hits in an inning without scoring.>

Well, anyone can get three singles and not score, but how about three triples in an inning and scoring only once? It happened for the first time in at least 50 years the other day:

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/13061...

The second tripler managed to get himself picked off third base.

<Phony Benoni> I enjoyed that 1944 box score. Made me wonder how often a pitcher manages a shutout with no strikeouts. But the losing pitcher (who gave up two runs) only had one strikeout himself.

Anyone in Europe would have been shocked at the mere thought of lighting up a ballpark at night in 1944.

keypusher: <Penguincw: Speaking of no-hitters, I see Chris Heston is pitching again tomorrow, the very first start since his no-hitter. What I've noticed a lot is that when a pitcher is coming off a no-hitter, their following start tends to be really bad. Hoping that'll happen here (and maybe De La Rosa can make a no-hit bid).>

That brings up a depressing memory. I was at this game:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/b...

Johan Santana pitched a complete game shutout and the Mets won 9-0.

His next start was a no-hitter.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/b...

And that was pretty much the end of his career. Sure wish they'd taken him out of the first game.

Phony Benoni: <keypusher> Not a shutout, but certainly the most famous game without a single strikeout.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/b...

In fact, considering the situation and all the twists and turns, perhaps the most exciting game ever played. "Best" might be another matter.

Jun-15-15  Jim Bartle: No strikeouts? Here's a fantastic photo taken during that game. Obviously taken with a very wide angle lens, making the stadium look much farther away: http://www.sportsposterwarehouse.co...

Penguincw: Well, that's a great way to snap an 11 game winning streak. :( Toronto got a run in the top of the 11th, but Cecil blew the save, and lost. :`(

I asked this question before, but it seemed to get lost, so I'll try again. Has there been any other team that had a 9+ game winning streak 3 consecutive years?

They've come a long way from Billy Martin sending Elston Howard into the bleachers with binoculars and a walkie-talkie to steal signs.

Jun-16-15  Jim Bartle: The Yankees had 9+ game winning streaks every year from 1956 through 1964 with the exception of 1959 and 1963.

keypusher: Apologies if this has been posted before, but I thought it was pretty interesting.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

It's an interactive map that tries to identify team fanbase locations based on facebook stats. The Yankees are more popular than the Mets pretty much everywhere except the immediate vicinity of Citi Field, and the Giants really lord over the A's. And the Yankees seem to be the closest thing to America's team.

keypusher: Also, when I was trying to guess what teams had been shut out the most, I got interested in overall records. Turns out the data was just a couple of clicks away.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/t...

The losingest non-expansion team is the Phillies, and the winningest by percentage is the Yankees. But the Giants still lead in total wins: they had a 20-year head start. If we include expansion teams, the Padres take over the bottom spot.

No real surprises there, but I was a little surprised by how close everyone was to .500. The Yankees are .569, the Phillies are .472. Of course, given the vast sample sizes (eight franchises have played more than 20,000 games) I shouldn't have been surprised at all.

Jun-16-15  Jim Bartle: I'd like to see a map of baseball fans pre-1958. The Cards would contrl most of the center of the country.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/t...

Also know as the Ol' 1-2-3s.

It's a measure of Ray Oylers bad luck that he couldn't have made even this team. One of their few average hitters was a shortstop.

Phony Benoni: I have no problem with stealing signs from the bench. That's just alert baseball, and no different from exploiting a pitcher who is tipping his pitches. And even Elston Howard in the center field stands doesn't bother me that much; it's still public information. The problem with that is taking advantage of being the home team.

Private, online information is another matter--although I wonder what they were stealing that wasn't already available to the Cardinals.
