Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: Bases loaded, no out, bottom 8 for Pittsburgh, and Dodgers got out of it with 0 run scored!!! Great, great game, 4-4 top 9.

Dodgers 4 runs on 5 hits, Pittsburgh 4 runs on 11 hits.

Fan interference?! Again!? Almost costly, but Jays up 2-1 in the 10th, should win this.

OhioChessFan: I throw left, bat right, very unusual, except in penguins.

Penguincw: Yeah, pretty unusual. I do about 60% of things with my left hand, 40% with my right hand.

I consider myself left handed, but I think cross-dominant (not to be confused with ambidextrous) is more accurate (doing different activities with different hands). However, I expect that to be more common (ex. being born left handed, but forced to right handedness when young).

Although I must admit one thing I take for granted is the ability to easily use the computer and write things down at the same time.

On a related topic, if you discriminate someone on their race, it's racism. If it's age, it's ageism (is that a word). What about discriminating someone for being left handed/right handed (is that even a thing)? Let's get creative.

OhioChessFan: I grab things almost exclusively with my right hand.

As for the discrimination, I'd go with handednessism.

WannaBe: 1. Ageism is a word.

2. What do you call someone who discriminate because another person is right/left handed: IDIOT.

3. In the company that I work for, almost 35% are left handed. And that is waaaaaaay higher than average population.

4. I have a friend, who holds the fork using his right hand, but holds chopsticks using his left hand. Swings golf club right handed (cheaper clubs) but plays tennis and Ping-Pong left handed. (Uses a computer mouse left handed, but with buttons set to right handed)

So I always tease him, did he buy any left handed golf/tennis/Ping-Pong balls?

No idea if he bats/throws left or right handed.

Phony Benoni: I'm clearly right-hand dominant, except that I computer-mouse left-handed. But that's a learned behavior. I broke my right wrist a few years ago, had to switch my mouse to the other side of the machine in order to work, and never switched it back. Now, I can't imagine right-handed mousing.

It has its advantages. Nobody ever wants to borrow my computer. . It's funny watching the IT guys sitting side-saddle in the chair to mouse right-handed.

The only other thing I do left-handed is play chess. Really. That one I can't explain. Perhaps, when I was young, I played over games left-handed while holding a book in my right hand. I really don't know.

And it too has its advantages. I always put the clock on my left when playing blitz, and nobody ever complains. They think I'm just being a nice guy.

Penguincw: To quote John Sterling: "Ballgame over! Blue Jays win! Theeeeeee Blue Jays win!"

David Price's first 2 starts with Toronto: 2-0, 15 IP, 6 H, 3 BB, 1 ER 18 K. His ERA and WHIP are both 0.60.

With the Blue Jays playing like this, you people may want to stop with the drinking; there will be plenty more days to binge. ;)

I remember when the Yankees used to dominate the Jays. This year, the Jays are 6-2.

Price's next start is scheduled against, you guessed it: NYY @ TOR.

  Penguincw: Drink up guys!

Jays win again, and sweep the series in New York! The last time I believe the Jays swept a 3 game series in the Bronx was 1992. :|

What I also find impressive is that excluding Teixeira's fan assisted home run on Friday, the Yankees had not scored a single run in the <series>.

The division lead is now down to just 1.5 games. Tomorrow, is a Rest Day, while the Jays return to host the Oakland Athletics. I don't want to jinx anything, but there seems to be a tradition in baseball of beating the strong team easily, and losing to the weaker teams. :|
