Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Aug-04-15  Jim Bartle: Question from a podcast:

Which player (only one) never wore the team nickname on his uniform?

Kaline, Gehrig, Schmidt, Ruth.

Phony Benoni: My instincts say Gehrig, but I have the feeling that it might be Kaline. On to Google Images!
Aug-04-15  Jim Bartle: Neither of the baseball experts on the show got it right.

I was reading about the NY Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers, and wondered how long their players stayed with the teams in SF and LA.

Mays stayed until 1972 and Drysdale to 1969. Beyond that more Dodgers stayed on the team.

Roseboro 1967, Gilliam, Koufax and Podres 1966.

The last NY Giant beside Mays left together in a trade after the 1962, Stu Miller and Mike McCormick going to Baltimore. McCormick came back later, winning a (dubious) Cy Young in 1967. Johnny Antonelli was traded in 1961.

The Giants really put a new lineup on the field when they got to SF, starting rookies Cepeda, Davenport, Kirkland and Schmidt.

Aug-05-15  Travis Bickle: Hey my good pal Phony Benoni, how the hell are ya? This is Harry Carey & I brought a special guest to say hello! ; P http://40.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m...

I tell ya The Cubs have won 5 in a row including beating the pesky Pirates last night 5-0!

It's been another hot 1 up here in Pardise, they changed beers but now it's warm Red White & Blue... Another sickening brand!

I think if The Cubbies finally win a World Series hopefully next year then maybe I can Rest In Peace...

Your pal always,
Harry Carey

Phony Benoni: Holy Cow indeed, <Harry Carey>. I just looked at the standings, and not only are the Cubs 7.5 games ahead of the Tigers, but they actually sit in the 2nd NL Wild Card spot. This could be the year!

And let me give you a little tip, Harry. If, perchance, it's the Cubs hoisting the Stanley Lombardi Trophy in October, and suddenly it turns cold around there, you might just look up Ol' Saint Pete and see if he pranked you a bit when he gave directions to your Eternal Resting Place. I'm sure you two will have a good laugh and, finally, break open a Cold Bud.

Penguincw: While the Cubs currently hold the record for longest championship drought, Toronto currently holds the record for longest active postseason drought.

Funny enough, they are also sitting in a 2nd wild card spot. Unfortunately, it's kinda hard to make up ground in the AL East, since whenever the Jays win, so do the Yankees. :|

Currently up 9-7 in a slugfest. Go Jays Go!

Phony Benoni: <Penquincw> I understand Mr. Price made quite an impression in his Toronto debut. Well, two of the kids the Tigers received -- Norris and Boyd -- have also won their first starts with impressive performances. (Tigers defeated KC and Johnny Cueto 2-1 tonight behind Boyd).

Time will tell.

WannaBe: Well, well, well, my dear Mr. <Bickle>, Cubs are 1/2 game out of Wild Card contention, chasing them SFG.

And guess who's coming to dinner Thurs-Sunday for 4-game series???

Give you 3 guesses and the first two don't count!! =))

Better be a Dodgers fan this weekend, because we go and visit the Pittsburgh Pirates for 4, too.

  WannaBe: Useless Information Dept.:

Currently, biggest lead within a division belongs to AL Central, no other (5 divisions) have a lead bigger than 5.5 (Pending on the StL game, they are in Over-Time Play)

Looks to be a win-win situation! The Tigers do visit Rogers Centre later this month, but I don't think Price is scheduled to start. Would love to see him pitch against the Rays though; I heard last year, he threw a one-hitter in his first return to Tampa since being traded.

<WannaBe>

Another big series is TOR-NYY in New York. If the Jays win the next 4 games, they'll trail the Yankees by just 1 game!

WannaBe: If you bet the over on the LAD-PHI game today, even with Z. Greinke pitching, you are a winner. Congratulations.

Zach's ERA just 'ballooned' to 1.74 (He was at 1.41) 6 runs, all earned, through 4IP.

Aug-06-15  Jim Bartle: He's probably tired from running out his home run.

Penguincw: The offense (which includes Grenke) looking to bail him out.

Yesterday, that happened, when the Jays bailed out Drew Hutchison, again. Tyler Duffey made his MLB debut yesterday, while LaTroy Hawkins had a memorable save yesterday: oldest Blue Jay to ever record a save, and 13th pitcher to record a save against all 30 teams.

EDIT: In other news: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...

< "Batter Hits Home Run on Backward Swing" >

I don't think I can even hit a home run in BP, batting normally. :p (FTR, I bat right, but throw left)

Penguincw: I'm not gonna lie, it was harder finding a right handed batter (and a left handed thrower) than I thought: this 2011 article says there have only been 522 (most of this pitchers) players like this: http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/20.... :|

At the top of the list is Rickey Henderson. Some other prominent pitchers include Tommy John, Koufax, and Randy Johnson.

I thought it was more common though...

WannaBe: LAD 10, PHI 8, guess them Eagles went for 2 but couldn't recover the on-side kick. Good football game.

Greinke's ERA is now 1.71 (Maybe the Dodgers can trade him to Detroit for some guy named K. Gibson...)

perfidious: Rickey Henderson was a natural left-hander who emulated his hero, Willie Mays, by batting right.

For a still tougher combination, try finding the number of non-pitchers throughout baseball history who have switch-hit while throwing left-handed. A good many pitchers have done so, but fewer position players have.

  Penguincw: <perfidious>

I've tried (like twice) left-handed batting before, so does that count?

What I've noticed is that people tend to throw with their dominant hand. About 90% of the population is right-handed, so that's only like 10% left handed throwers. Among those 10% southpaw throwers, almost all of them <also> bat left handed.

Though batting switch is still better than batting right handed.

Do all of you throw and bat right?
