Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: So I'm watching this C Hamel (SF-TEX) game, lead off batter for Rangers is Delino DeShields...

Man, thought he retired 10-years ago with the Dodgers!!! (It's his son, Jr. Playing for Texas, man, I'm getting old...)

WannaBe: Checkin' the standings, if the season ends today:

The same teams that made the playoffs would be in, again. SF and Pitt would be Wild Cards, again.

The only difference would be the seeding of WAS, LAD, and StL.

The AL would be completely unrecognizable, 3 new teams, HOU, MIN, NYY, would replace DET, BAL & OAK from 2014.

Aug-01-15  Jim Bartle: <Man, thought he retired 10-years ago with the Dodgers!!! (It's his son, Jr. Playing for Texas, man, I'm getting old...)>

Maybe they can trade him for Pedro Martinez Jr.

WannaBe: D@ng, Posey just hit a line shot HR that barely cleared the fence, but did leave the field...

I'm by no means a SFG fan, but I'd vote for him for MVP.

(As my fifth choice, after Greinke, Adrien Gonzalez, Kershaw, and Pedro Martinez Jr.)

WannaBe: Apparently Kershaw was yet again, part of history today. Earlier this season when LAD went to SF, Kershaw faced off against M. Bumgardner, that was the first time regular season MVP went head to head to World Series MVP.

Today Kershaw faced Trout, and it marked the first time that NL MVP faced off against AL MVP.

I must say, the last couple of years have been great for LA area baseball and fans. Maybe we will see LAA/LAD World Series?

Maybe he is now working on NL East, already have ATL and NYM crossed off the list.

WannaBe: Breakin' Gnus! ChiSox have called up Trayce Thompson (brother of Warriors' Klay Thompson) from AAA Charlotte affiliate.

Reaction: Bulls have offered to trade M. Jordan plus S. Pippen to the Sox in exchange for Thompson and a rack of basketballs.

Aug-03-15  LucB: <WannaBe>: Regarding that young boy: that IS sad news.. It reminds me of a similar accident that happened to me over 30 years ago, during a lunch break where I was working. We were hitting and catching softballs and I was next to the batter, retrieving them for him. I got too close and he got me exactly like described in the article. The end of the bat got me in the face, my glasses shattered and cut me below the left eye. I needed a few stitches and that was it; no broken bones. So all in all, nothing major, but what a scary experience. Contrary to the young boy, I was fortunate that he hit a ball before hitting ME, since the impact reduced the velocity of the bat.

WannaBe: Today in MLB history, 22 years ago, N. Ryan showed how to give noogie to R. Ventura:

Probably one of the funniest one-sided old man v. young whipper snapper fight ever.

< "Blue Jays’ Sanchez, Gibbons suspended by MLB" >

Are you [insert swear word here] kidding me? What did they ever do? Ventura should be the one suspended.

Unbelievable. Ventura hits Donaldson and Tulo multiple times (with his 100 mph fastball near the head), no one bats an eye (no pun intended). Sanchez (a pitcher whose pitches have tons of movement), hits <one> Royal in the leg, ejection followed by suspension.

But it is the Royals...

A KC-TOR postseason series would be really interesting to see. The Royals will probably clinch the 1st seed in the AL, so they might meet through the ALDS or ALCS depending on how the Jays do.

perfidious: Dave Dombrowski, the man who brought respectability back to Tigerland after the team's freefall into oblivion, is 'released' from his contract.

Por que???

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on...

Aug-04-15  Jim Bartle: From what I saw that doesn't seem right. KC was throwing at Donaldson's head (not body) over and over and the ump took no action.

Phony Benoni: <perfidious> Total shock around here. Dombroski's contract was up at the end of the year, and there were increasing rumors he would not be back, but nobody dreams of a midseason firing..

Most likely, he pissed off owner Mike Ilitch in some way, either with his recent moves or his attitude. Mike Ilitch has always wanted to win now, at any cost. He is wise enough to know when he needs to wait, but was apparently pushed past his limit. The decision was apparently made on Saturday, just not put into effect until today.

The man taking over, Al Avila, has been closely associated with Dombroski for a quarter-century. That tells me this was a sudden impulse rather than a long-planned move; Avila will be an interim caretaker unless the team suddenly catches fire. If not, it's a whole new regime.

Avila immediately issued a Vote of Confidence for manager Brad Ausmus, which of course means the Tigers will be getting a new field manager sooner or later. Ausmus was given the job with no managerial or coaching experience, and that is now widely recognized as a fatal flaw. There are no problems with Ausmus personally and everything seems fine in the clubhouse, but he has been unable to light a spark in the players and bring out their best as a team.

Dombroski has been on the job for well over the decade. Respectability is fine, but championships have proved elusive, and it's looking like the Tigers might not be contenders for a while.
