Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Penguincw: Mike Leake had a no-hitter into the 5th.

I found this funny. TTT's (Tulo's initials) first career hit was off of a misplayed ball by Jose Reyes.

I also see that a bunch of other trades are happening (it all started with a move by the Blue Jays).

Phony Benoni: You may have noticed this week that Alex Rodriguez became the fourth player to homer in his teens, 20s, 30s and 40s, joining Ty Cobb, Rusty Staub and Gerry Sheffield.

Interesting company. Staub was a solid, clean player, but he'll never make it to the Hall of Fame. Sheffiidl and Rpdriguez have clouds. And even Cobb might have had trouble in today's politically correct atmosphere.

Which brings up a couple of questions:

1) Do you think Rodrguez is clean now.?

2) If so, and he strings together a few move good likes like this one to climb higher in the all-time lists, do you think voters might be inclined to forgive and forget?

Phony Benoni: On a happier note, seeing the name of LaTroy Hawkins got me to wondering how many pitchers won games in their teens, 20s, 30s and 40s. So far I've found three, none of whom is Nolan Ryan (he didn't win a game as a teenager.)

WannaBe: So NFL filed their case in NY, and Brady filed their case in MN. By chance, I just found out, Alan Page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minne... have mandatory retirement at August 31, 2015.

Heck, why don't both sides agree to have <HIM> hear the case?!

Phony Benoni: Well, nobody seems to be in the mood, so here are the three pitchers who wom games in their teens, 20s, 30s and 40s:

Bert Blyleven

Mike Morgan

Herb Pennock

Morgan barely sneaks in. He won just two games as a teenager, about two months before his 20th birthday.

Phony Benoni: <playground player> Nuxhall came to mind, until I remembered what his age-15 performance was like:

He didn't pitch in the majors for nearly eight years after that. And retired before age 40 anyway.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/standings

Look at the Run Differentials for Boston, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Colorado, then look at <Oakland>.

How on earth do you explain that?!!? +36, You know what the first place Nats' RD? +33.

Then you look at Toronto (51-51, that would 0.500 for anyone who aren't good at math).

3rd place in AL East, and they are +100 in RD, the only other team that comes close to triple digits in RD? St.L. and they are in first place, 17 games over .500

Phony Benoni: Yes, I heard that Toronto was in the mix for Price. Tigers pick up three left-handed starters, hopefully at least one being John Smoltz.

  WannaBe: According to this article:

http://www.networkworld.com/article...

Brady's mention of iPhone had +$733K for Apple, but -617K for Samsung.

Also, by the way, Mr. Brady, iMessages are stored in the cloud, while Android text messages are stored on the phone themselves.

So, in the future, you can just tell Mr. Goodell and his investigators to dig up the messages from Apple hisself. No need to trash another phone, you can save yourself few bucks. =)

Hi <PB>. I heard you won't have interest access for the weekend, and need someone to update the puzzles for you.

I'm not going to be doing so (at least for today), but since you're already reading this, keep reading:

I'd just like to let you know of a couple of format corrections for Game Collection: Game of the Day 2015.

May 12: <cg> added the "That is the Q" part

June 21: Pun should not have quotation mark

June 30: Should not have a bracket

Just a small list. :)

(I don't have anything else to do)

Aug-01-15  LucB: Hi <PB>, here is the Saturday, 1 August puzzle:

WannaBe: It is really too bad that Angels won't be playing SF Giants again this year, (Unless World Series) Angels have a reliever named Trevor Gott. (Not related to ex-Dodger Jim Gott, apparently)

And I was really hoping for Gott v. Angel Pagan match up. Maybe in the future, one can only pray. =))
