Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Another one for you King Hunters. Black's monarch travels fron g8 to b8, then takes the Great Circle Route back to h3 before calling it a day.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> I've posted a question for you at L T Magee vs J Holland, 1948

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

   Jun-06-22 W Ritson-Morry vs G T Crown, 1947

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Fill it again, Sam.
Sep-09-06  brankat: <PB> <Fill it again, Sam.> You guys sure are good "consumers". Wonder if the game will finish OTB or maybe UTB ;-)
Sep-09-06  aw1988: filler
Sep-10-06  square dance: hey guys, ive suggested two rules changes in <brankat>'s forum. i'd like to get your input on these matters. thanks.
Sep-10-06  suenteus po 147: <square dance> They look logical to me. Your request for rule changes has my support.
Sep-10-06  suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> & <square dance> Well, it appears that 5...e6 has been played. They seem to be guiding us down a narrow road according to the OE, one which leads to mostly draws (very few white and black wins). The only move six in the database here is 6.Bd3 which is what I figured we would play anyway. However, if a more interesting move can be suggested, I will be willing to consider it.
Sep-10-06  suenteus po 147: Just more of your typical everyday filler.

Phony Benoni: After ...e6 it doesn't seem as sensible to play Bc4, so the bishop is probably going to d3 in any case.

Phony Benoni: Has Arno Nickel gotten back to you yet?
Sep-10-06  aw1988: Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. Up there, they discovered that Tommy and Laura had arrived at the exact same time as they had. Who would get the sole pail of water? Jack and Jill were Christians, Democrats, and owned a local puppy shelter. Tommy and Laura were Buddhists, Communists, and owned a local parliamentary building which was frowned upon due to past incidents. However, Jack and Jill knew that in spite of negative allegations, Tommy and Laura were truly wonderful people at heart. So they let them have the bucket of water.

What is the moral to this story? I don't know, this was more filler.

Sep-10-06  square dance: of course 6.Bd3 will be the move. i'll post it tomorrow. probably 6...Ngf6 is coming next.
Sep-10-06  square dance: filler.
Sep-11-06  brankat: <Phony Benoni> After going trough Your 2 completed Miniatures from <CC>'s tourney, I have come to the conclusion that, at least, a part of Your Bio is there just to fool Your potential opponents :-)

Phony Benoni: <brankat> That's an astute observation. In fact, my correspondence rating is nowhere near 1950; it's more like 1700.

It's not like I play worse at correspondence than I do over-the-board. The problem is that everyone else plays better.

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> Only against certain opponents. Perhaps I should bring up "Randy" here.

"Randy" was a member of my college chess club. One year the club members kept track of our won-lost records in blitz chess. "Randy's" final score was 3 wins, 238 losses. (Two of the wins came when he beat the slowest player in the club twice on time.)

When we showed him the results at the end of the year, "Randy" was aghast. "I don't believe it!", he said. 'I always beat Uncle Fred!"

The point being, if I ever found somebody that Uncle Fred beat all tie time, I might be 3950 against him.

Sep-11-06  brankat: <Phony Benoni> So now we know <Wannabe>'s nickname :-)
Sep-11-06  positionalgenius: <Phony Benoni>will you play in a tournament I'm organizing? See my profile for info.
Sep-11-06  aw1988: filler
Sep-11-06  aw1988: Oh, I just comprehended the reason for "filler" now. Still, it's highly entertaining, so I think I'll keep it up.

Phony Benoni: <positionalgenius> Sorry, but that's too late at night for me. I have to be in bed long before that.
Sep-11-06  suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> & <square dance> Just got home after a long day at the office to see the NKs have responded quickly with the almost knee-jerk 6...Ngf6. Our only real options, as I see it are 7.Qe2 and 7.N1f3. The only problem is that most games that have 7.Qe2 seem to transpose into 7.Nif3 lines. I don't think our opponents will fall into the dorky traps that are the reason for playing 7.Qe2, so I vote for 7.N1f3, for no other reason than Anand and Kramnik played it: Anand vs Bologan, 2003 and Kramnik vs Ponomariov, 2005 :p
Sep-11-06  suenteus po 147: What <aw1988> said.

Phony Benoni: 7.Qe2 and 7.N1f3 seem to transpose in almost all cases. I generally play for dorky traps myself, but if both of you prefer 7.N1f3 I certainly have no objection.
