Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: Ichiro is now 4 hits shy of 3K (MLB), Marlins host New York Metropolitans this weekend.

Depending on if/when Don Mattingly decides to play him, Ichiro probably will break the record Sat or Sun. Unless he goes 4 for 5 or 4 for 6 Friday night.

Jul-22-16  Party Animal: Yo Phony, Matt Holliday of St Louis last night just missed getting smashed in the face with a 95 mile per hour fastball!! It clipped him on the nose & he escaped major injury. He even had the stones to touch first base!

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> Will it count if Ichito goes 4 for 4 Friday night?

<Party ANimal> Always scary. Boy, it looked HOT out there.

WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> No, going 4-4 will not count. Now, I want to see him go 4 for 3!

WannaBe: Here's an interesting bit of Trivia:

Ichiro is on pace to become the 4th player born outside of U.S. to have 3K hits.

Who are the other 3?

WannaBe: This has to be strangest stat for 2016 season:

StL at home 24-28 on road 27-16

The only other team that's even close to that kind of road record is the AL East leading Bosox, home 33-20 on road 21-19. Cleveland is close, with 26-16 and 30-22

Everybody else have 20+ losses on the road. Then you have Toronto, 27-21 and 27-22, it doesn't matter where they play.

Phony Benoni: Odd box score line for Ian Kinsler tonight:

AB: 5
R: 3
H: 1
BB: 0
K: 3

Should be easy to figure out what happened.

saffuna: There has to be at least one dropped third strike. I see no other possibility.

OhioChessFan: HBP, E, dropped 3rd strike, reached base on fielder's choice, no, I can't figure it out, although I'm betting on the fielder's choice and the error once each.

saffuna: I was figuring BB included HBP, but if not that's the best possibility.
Jul-23-16

Phony Benoni: My bad. I didn't read the fine print deeply enough to see that he had an HBP.

As it stood, I figured there had to be a dropped third strike somewhere, but it occurs to me that I'm not sure sure how catcher's interference is scored.

Penguincw: Yeah, if he's 1 for 5 with 3 K, that has to mean he has 1 hit, 3 strikeouts, and 1 other out. That last out could be reached on error, fielder's choice, whatever.

I believe catcher interference, the catcher is charged with an error, and batter reaches, but no at bat.

Of course, you also don't mention how many RBIs he has, so he could've had a sac fly, and reached on an error. But in that case, if the fielder drops it, but the runner would've scored anyway, it would've been an error, and thus an at-bat. Same for a sac bunt, as if the runner would've advanced anyway, and the batter-runner reaches, he would've been credited with a hit or error.

---

In other news, Cabrera had a big night yesterday, has he now has 1500 career RBI. In NYM-MIA, it's deGrom vs. Fernandez today. Hopefully Ichiro gets to play.

I know this is unlikely, and probably no one is even considering this, but imagine if he got traded to the Pirates, Cubs, Red Sox (or any future Mariners opponent), and got his 3000th MLB hit vs. the Mariners.

WannaBe: Catcher Interference is scored as E2, you can add CI as clarification, as opposed to a catcher throwing the ball into right field. Or into the dugout.

Pitcher Inteference is scored WB, for <WannaBe>.

Phony Benoni: Thinking a bit about the Magic Number today. (Yes, I'm an Optimist, or in the Tigers' case a Pessimist.)

Here are the National League standings on August 3, 1899:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

The Cleveland Spiders have been mathematically eliminated, even though the "Magic Number" to do so is still at 17. (This is a 154-game season).

The best record they can achieve is 76-78, two games below .500. Subce this is a "closed system" with no inter-division or inter-league play, some other er team must finish above .500, thus ahead of Cleveland. We don't know yet who will eliminate them, but somebody must.

WannaBe: Giants didn't throw one to the backstop, the next inning Yankees threw one to the backstop on IBB.

But runner on third did not advance home. Still tied at 1-1, but now seeing one case where IBB with man on third almost won for the Yankees, and the next inning where potential winning run almost scored.

Phony Benoni: At what point is an IBB counted as an IBB? I'm thinking of the Rollie Fingers - Johnny bench play here. If he had walked Bench, only one pitch would have been thrown intentionally wide. Is that still an IBB?
