Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Aug-31-09  Jim Bartle: I don't know about the 49ers this year. I think they traded in the team in the Cash for Clunkers program.
Aug-31-09  playground player: <Phony Benoni> Thank you for your comments. I already have your game with Patty in my collection.

I never play blitz, because I already have a tendency to play fast and playing faster always gets me into trouble. When I hurry, I don't play well.

Actually, I was playing a form of the Benoni before I ever heard the name: that's what happens in playground chess. I came up with it because my brother-in-law was giving me fits with 1.d4; and when I answered with c5, it gave him fits. Later on, it served me very well in Pogo chess. But it still doesn't help me much against strong and serious players. My losses with the Albin are much more suspenseful.

Phony Benoni: <LMAJ> Well, Travis is from Chicago, so I think he must favor the Chicago Cardinals. Does the city have another NFL team?
Aug-31-09  Jim Bartle: Yeah, Travis keeps running on about how great Ollie Matson is.

Phony Benoni: Oh, them! I keep forgetting; Travis hasn't mentioned them for all of an hour now.
Aug-31-09  Jim Bartle: Bad idea to forget them. Ditka has got them ready to play this year.

ok sticking to soccer from now on...

Aug-31-09  Travis Bickle: <Open Defence> Deffi you have to come to Chicago and I will set us up with a couple of choice sky box seats for a Bears game! I'll provide you with transportation to and from the game in my own taxi. For you I'll even wear my Bears head at the game!

Phony Benoni: <Open Defence> Sorry about that; I was trying to joke with <Travis Bickle> (a.k.a. #1 Bears Fan) more than I was with you. My sense of humor doesn't always come across the way I intend it.

By the way, the Chicago Cardinals moved to St. Louis in 1960. I'll bet a lot of U.S. football fans have never heard of them!

Aug-31-09  Jim Bartle: Yes, a lot of teams are forgotten: the Cincinnati Royals (even the Rochester Royals before that) the Syracuse Nationals, the Fort Wayne Pistons, the Seattle Pilots, the Dallas Texans...

And...the Giants sign Brad Penny? If they had to pick up a Red Sox reject, why not Smoltz??

Apparently, the price was right. And he might turn out to be the best hitter on the team.

Phony Benoni: Seriously, looking at the schedule, I don't think 4 or 5 wins for the Lions is out of the question. There are several fairly weak opponents both at home and on the road, and they should be able to scrape one or two wins in the division as well.

I just wish they had gotten Pittsburgh on the road and Cincinnati at home. Now, it's just a waste of a home game.

Aug-31-09  Deus Ex Alekhina: <LIFE Master AJ> You should be aware that Phony was editor of Michigan Chess for years & also wrote many articles on the exploits of all the Michiganders at the US Opens. Phony also writes a chess blog & has mentioned the US open often. You can access his blog by going to www.michess.org, then hit "links" & you will see "davidmoodychessjournal". Also you can access the magazines archives where you can see, for example, from Oct 1990, his article on the Jacksonville US Open. There may be a photo of him from one or another back archived issues. He might know. I mself took hundreds of photos from Michigan events & I have a photo of a pensive Phony from a game, circa 1991, vs Sylvestre Robes. I also have photos & video from the 1992 Open, but PB was known to be an elusive chap, fleeing the board after making his move, so he is not apparent. I also have about 100 photos from a Reshevsky simul (1985) & a few of the 1979 computer world champ in Detroit, with Euwe & Kolti front & center. I am at the library & I don't know how to post these photos, if I did, I would. Oh well. By the way, Brett Favre's main motivation seems to be to get back at the Packers for not taking him back after his second "retirement" Isn't that what sparks him? Revenge? Remember the story (confirmed) about him last year calling up the Lions to give them advice on how to beat the Pack? And he's playing with that torn rotator cuff! Revenge, that's what it is.

Phony Benoni: I can't deny any of that, though I've been too busy around here to keep up the blog.

I didn't know all those issues were available online, but I'll save you the trouble of looking. Probably the least unflattering picture, from 1982, is at the bottom of page three of this issue:

http://www.michess.org/interim/maga...

Aug-31-09  Jim Bartle: Pettite loses perfecto with two out in 7th vs. Oriolos.
Aug-31-09  vonKrolock: Another point for not beating a girl... Well, I myself got an early habit of losing to girls, and to little boys too - "Diário de Minas", 1973 < Paraná State <sic> strong player loses to girl from Minas Gerais> (she was Maria Cristina De Oliveira ) - "Folha de Londrina" 1976 <"Experienced player lose to 10 years old boy from Londrina City"> (Horacio Matsuura) . And suddenly people would start wondering - 'what strong player is this that lose to every girl or boy in this country?!'

Phony Benoni: My own distinction is being the first USCF-rated Expert (>2000) to lose to a microcomputer in a tournament game. This was 1982, mind you, so it was a real accomplishment. Even got my name in a company press release.
