 | | Phony Benoni: <Sigh>. It could only happen to the Lions. Quarterback Duante Culpepper missed practice yesterday after stubbing his toe on a carpet at home. He tore the skin around his two middle toes, and needed eight stitches to close the wound. Go right ahead. I'll start the bidding with "Carpet Tunnel Syndrome". |
| Sep-01-09 | | Jim Bartle: Meanwhile, the Dodgers pick up a future Hall of Famer to pinch hit, without giving up a thing. Unbelievable. Not as bad as Atlanta getting McGriff in August of 1993, but still... Rumors are that the Giants were close to getting Thome, but the Dodgers headed them off. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Sounds like the White Sox have decided this isn't their year. That's OK for the Tigers, but the Twins are probably a bigger threat anyway. |
| Sep-01-09 | | Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: Sounds like the White Sox have decided this isn't their year. That's OK for the Tigers, but the Twins are probably a bigger threat anyway.> For the division yeah I agree, but what about them Damn Yankees!! LOL |

 | | Phony Benoni: Yeah, where's Joe Hardy when you need him? |
| Sep-01-09 | | Jim Bartle: Forget Joe Hardy! Where are the Washington Senators? |
Sep-01-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Actually, I think quite a few teams are looking for Applegate. Maybe not as many as are looking for Lola, but still a good bunch. |
| Sep-01-09 | | Jim Bartle: Lola would make a great general manager. Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets. As a kid I thought old Joe Hardy (pre-change) looked so decrepit. Now I'm not all that much better. I feel for him trying to catch that fly ball (movie) or slide into home (book) in the last inning. |
| Sep-01-09 | | Jim Bartle: Just stumbled onto this looking for Damn Yankees references: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGMP... Check out Nolan Ryan in particular. |
Sep-01-09
 | | Phony Benoni: L. Nolan Ryan? G. Thomas Seaver??
And J.C. Martin actually had a first name??? |
| Sep-01-09 | | Jim Bartle: Darrell Harrelson. Frank McGraw.
The tape cuts off before the front row, where I guess Gil Hodges was. You can tell the Ed Sullivan audience was largely from out of town; New Yorkers would have been screaming from the start. |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: I saw your picture, it defintely rang a couple of bells. While I am fairly sure we have never played, I think we sat side-by-side at one tournament ... I remember, because I was fairly interested in your game. (I think that it was eventually drawn.) |

 | | Phony Benoni: <LIFE MAster AJ> I have all my tourament games stored in ChessBase, so I know we have never played. As for sitting next to each other, it's possible; I have a terrible memory for faces. Let's see: I know for sure you played the US Opens in Palo Alto (1981) and Jacksonville (1990). I had only one draw at each tournament. The one at Palo Alto was undistiguished, so here's the other. Does it ring a bell in your obvisouly-superior-to-mine memory? I have no idea if this is sound. I'm not particularly good at analyzing my own games, especially while I'm playing them. <11...b5 12.g4 Bb7 13.Bxf6 gxf6 14.g5 hxg5 15.hxg5 Rg8 16.Rh7 Nf8 17.g6 Rxg6 18.Rxf7>

 | | Phony Benoni: Enough chess. It's time to get down to that most serious business of this time of year: calculating the Tragic Number for teams about to be eliminated from the playoffs. On the bubble are the <Washington Nationals>; 3 more losses will take them out of wild card consideration. (They've already lost out on the division.) Next up are the <Baltimore Orioles>, at 7. They're also out of the division race. We'll keep you posted as the excitement builds. |

| Sep-02-09 | | Jim Bartle: In the NFL the Raiders were eliminated two weeks ago. |
| Sep-02-09 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle: In the NFL the Raiders were eliminated two weeks ago.> LOL!! What ever happened to "Just Win Baby" and "Commitment To Excellence"?? |
| Sep-02-09 | | Jim Bartle: Raider fans are in denial. Whenever it's pointed out they've lost 75% of their games the past five years, they just say, "We're great, we were in the Super Bowl six years ago." And Al Davis is about as up to date on NFL football as George Halas. They just lost an exhibition game to New Orleans, 45-7. And apparently it wasn't that close. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Those of you into American history may remember how the Republican Party, following the Civil War, campaigned against Southern Democrats by "Waving the bloody shirt". Well, now it looks like they may be reprising that with "The Bloody Sock": http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp... |
| Sep-02-09 | | Jim Bartle: The Republicans apparently feel the need to have a hard-throwing right-hander in the Senate. So with Bunning retiring, Schilling looks to be a good replacement. Before Bunning they had Vinegar Bend Mizell, though he was in the House and was a lefty. |
| Sep-02-09 | | A.G. Argent: Jim, Giant's up by four in the 9th over the Champs. They ain't goin' away. Good deal. |
| Sep-02-09 | | Jim Bartle: Good news, after getting only two hits last night against Hamels. |

 | | keypusher: I just saw something on ESPN that puzzled me, and I knew where to seek enlightenment. The LA Dodgers recently traded for Jim Thome. Thome cannot play in the field (before agreeing to the trade, he called the Dodgers to make sure they were aware of this). So he's basically a pinch-hitter for the Dodgers. ESPN also informs me that Thome makes $13 million a year. Does it make any sense at all to get a pinch hitter and pay him $13 million? (Or are the White Sox still responsible for paying his salary?). And wouldn't Thome be much, much more valuable to someone in the American League? I am particularly puzzled because ESPN also tells me that the Dodgers' GM is a genius. So any explanation any of you can offer would be welcome. |
| Sep-03-09 | | Jim Bartle: It does seem odd to have a Hall of Famer as a pinch hitter. The Giants were apparently trying to get him as well, but wanted to have him play first base. Watched the Giants for one of the few times tonight, and what I've been reading seems true. This team swings at more bad pitches than any team I've ever seen. They never walk, and opposing pitchers know they don't have to throw many strikes. Giants pitchers gave up only three runs in three games vs. Philadelphia, but lost two of the three. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Keypusher> The salary situation varies from case to case; it would have been part of the deal. I checked a couple of places, and it looks like the Dodgers will pay Thome's salary for the rest of the year, about $2.5 million of a $13 million contract. (One month works out to about 1/6th of the season.) I think there were intangibles involved for the Dodgers. Besides any contributions on the field, Thoma is a good presence in the clubhouse and a friend of Manny Ramiurez. You need good vibes at a time like this, with postseason pressure looming. Another motivation was simply to keep Thome away from one of their competitors, such as San Francisco. This is essentially a one-month rental, since Thome will be a free agent at the end of the year and the Dodgers will certainly not want to re-sign him. It's not unsual for a team in playoff contention to temporary sign a top player for a little extra help down the stretch. I'm sure our West Coast experts will chip in on this as well. In fact, they may have responded while I was writing this answer. |
