 | | Phony Benoni: <keypusher> You have to have good piitching to have a chance. Immediately after the All-Star break, the Tigers went into Yankee Stadium and held the Yankees to nine runs in three games. Of course, the Tigers got swept because they only scored five runs in the three games, but they have the pitching to pull off an upset in a short series like they did in 2006. If, of course, they get to the postseason. A 6 1/2 game lead can easily melt in four weeks. |
|
Sep-07-09 | | Jim Bartle: Even with an outfield that looks unimposing (Damon, Cabrera and Swisher?), the Yankees are playing similarly to the 1998-2000 teams. They seem to get the big hit or make the big play at the right time day after day. And they don't give up extra outs or bases in the field. And their shortstop, catcher and relief ace are playing just as well as their counterparts on those great earlier teams. |

 | | Phony Benoni: No doubt, the Yankees are the class of the game right now. I'm just trying to keep my hopes up. And maybe the Cardinals shouldn't be underestimated. By the way, here are the winning percentages of each division, if it means anything: AL West .531 (Angels)
AL East .521 (Yankees)
NL West .516 (Dodgers)
NL Cent .488 (Cardinals)
NL East .481 (Phils)
AL Cent .472 (Tigers) |

Sep-08-09 | | A.G. Argent: As far as the Yanks are concerned, the factor, the constant, that scares me the most is Rivera. He is almost inhuman in post-season. All we can hope for (us Yankee haters)is that someone picks them off in the first round in the short series. If not, I fear they will be hard to beat. I, of course will be pulling for the Tigers, Czar. If not, the Angels. Or whoever meets them in the ALCS. ( Actually, I must admit, I think the Angels would stand the best chance against the b.....ds in the ALCS). And, thanks to Selig's idiotic new rule about the winner of the All-Star game having home field advantage in the World Series, they have to be the favorites to win it all. |

 | | playground player: <Jim Bartle> Speaking of American players in Japan, and Japanese players in America, do you have any Masonori Murakami stories for us? I remember being very impressed by him during his short stint with the Giants in the Sixties. |
|
Sep-08-09 | | Jim Bartle: I certainly remember Murakami, and didn't understand why he had to go back to Japan. He and Frank Linzy were a pretty good relief pair. But I don't remember much else about him. |

Sep-08-09 | | Jim Bartle: Very nice, just great. |

 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> Sometimes, you just got to be careful of what you ask for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpcU... One doth wonder, if <Phony Benoni> really sings like Beaker: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCbu... |
|
Sep-09-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> No way. Beaker has a much better voice. I can't do much more than back-up vocals. When I sing, people back-up. |
|
Sep-09-09
 | | Phony Benoni: By the way, you realize that in the "Ode to Joy" clip, Beaker is actually singing the words to "My Darling Clemeentine". |
|
Sep-09-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Today's irritant: announcers who pride themselves on their logical acumen by using "fair pole" instead of "foul pole". I'll accept that when they start saying "fair line" instead of "foul line". |
|
Sep-09-09 | | Jim Bartle: You make a foul point.
What tends to bother me is the overuse of statistics. Like telling me what percentage of the time a batter swings at the first pitch, or how many full counts he has faced. I'm glad it's no longer just batting average and home runs, but there has to be a limit. |
|
Sep-09-09 | | Jim Bartle: Time to start an argument, with a quick list of the best defensive players of the past 50 years: C-Gary Carter/Del Crandall/Ivan Rodriguez
1B Keith Hernandez
2B Bill Mazeroski
SS Ozzie Smith
3B Brooks Robinson
LF Joe Rudi
CF Gary Pettis
RF Al Kaline/Ichiro/Jesse Barfield
P Greg Maddux/Jim Kaat |

 | | WannaBe: Bill Buckner for first base! |
|
Sep-09-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Never knew <WannaBe> was a Mets fan. Picking top fielders is difficult, because there's not a good basis of comparison. Fielding average can be meaningless, and Gold Gloves have become a popularity contest where it's next to impossible to kick out an incumbent. I doubt there would be few disagreements with Smith for SS or Robinson for 3B. Surely Clemente in RF, Mays in CF, and Yastrzemski in LF would have to be considered. Rudi kind of surprised me. I had the impression of a very solid, fundamental player, but not a spectacular one. |

 | | WannaBe: You kidding <ME>!!! Jose Canseco had skills, <<SKILLS>>, I tell ya... Once, he made a baseball bounce off his head!! |
|
Sep-09-09 | | Jim Bartle: Kind of hard to pick a best leftfielder, as most are there because they can't play center or right. Yastrzemski certainly was good, especially in Boston, and Clemente had that great arm. And there are many excellent centerfielders. Speaking of Gold Gloves, one year Rafael Palmeiro won one for first base when he was primarily a DH. |
|
Sep-09-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Must have been a Gold Batting Glove. |

 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> That's some game you've got there. Black is indeed doomed in another move or two--no way out. Meanwhile, too bad you couldn't have overthrown GM Christensen. Is that game worth showing us? Speaking of Golden Gloves, many years ago I visited Bobby Schantz's bar in the Delaware valley and saw his collection of fielding trophies. A little later, my wife and I went to Old Timer's Day at Yankee Stadium and watched Schantz play... shortstop! He still looked pretty good out there. Certainly one of the best-fielding pitchers ever, by all accounts. |
|
Sep-10-09
 | | playground player: <Him Bartle> None of your right fielders, as good as they were, could touch Clemente. And how could you leave Dwight Evans off the list? |
|
Sep-10-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> If you really want to see my game with Christiansen, I've written about it here: http://www.michess.org/archives/art... There's a story attached, of course. My whole life seems to be a story, and not always one with a happy ending. |
|
Sep-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Ooooops, forgot about Dwight Evans. Clemente certainly could throw, but I don't remember that much about him chasing down flies. |
|
Sep-10-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Orioles bit the dust last night. On the bubble: Kansas city (3), Oakland, Pittsburgh, Toronto (5). |
