| Sep-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Kansas City managed to outlast two other teams? That's an accomplishment for them. |
Sep-10-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Only because they just completed a sweep of the Tigers. For some reason, that team gives us a lot of trouble. |
| Sep-11-09 | | Travis Bickle: I want to be like Mike!

 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis Bickle> Not bad. But he was no Andre Dawson in right field. |
| Sep-11-09 | | A.G. Argent: Jim, is that your compilation? If so and you wouldn't mind three guys at each position, I throw in Craig Nettles at 3rd. |
| Sep-11-09 | | Jim Bartle: It's not anything done with any research or deep thought. I think Graig Nettles would be #2 at third base. I'll never forget how Ron Cey came up to bat in the 78 World Series and waved to Nettles to move over a little, away from the line. Others who haven't been mentioned are Wes Parker, Omar Vizquel, Roberto Alomar, Dick Green, Jim Edmonds, Mickey Mantle and, uh, Ron Swoboda. Anybody see Upton just nonchalant that ball over his shoulder on the warning track a couple of nights ago. Trying to look cool and dropping the ball is not good. |
Sep-11-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Did Ron Swoboda ever make another catch besides THAT one? |
| Sep-11-09 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> Well, at least you beat Mike de la Hoz. And he played for the Indians! I have no criticisms to make of your ignominious loss to GM Christensen. Anyhow, he only won because he was playing White and that's always an advantage. It would've been really bad if he'd offered to change sides with you, at the point in the game where you resigned, and gone on to win with Black. (Maybe I'd better not tease you like that. You might not realize I was joshing, and get real mad, and I dunno what would happen next...) I have never played against a GM, much less beaten one--nor an IM, LM, Brew Master, nor any other kind of master. I'm sure I would have my hands full just staying on the board with you for 20 moves. Just think, though, how you would've felt if you'd gotten a draw--like Lord Dunsany against Capablanca. You'd be dining on that story for the rest of your life! Maybe next time... |
| Sep-11-09 | | Jim Bartle: I tossed in Swoboda for fun. I think the catch is famous partly because he was not a particularly good outfielder. |
| Sep-11-09 | | A.G. Argent: I was gonna mention Greenie at 2nd. Saw him and Reggie once combine on a relay to home to nail a guy that was so bam-bam that I had to blink a couple of times to make sure I really saw it. Very under-rated 2nd baseman. So with the A's in mind, let's tag on at third Cap'n Sal, albeit a sentimental favorite, admittedly. |
| Sep-11-09 | | Jim Bartle: I was watching the Red Sox and thinking how ugly their chartreuse caps are. Then flipping through the channels I see every team is wearing them, I guess for September 11. It's really strange to see Derek Jeter in a red cap. |
| Sep-11-09 | | Jim Bartle: So Jerek has passed Gehrig for the Yankee hit record. But it's the third inning and it's been raining, so maybe he'll have to break it again another day. |
Sep-11-09
 | | Phony Benoni: I was surprised Gehrig held (or holds) the record. But then, I don't think the Yankees have ever had a player spend 20 years with the team. And now I'll have to look up players who have done that. |
| Sep-11-09 | | Jim Bartle: Yanks haven't had a 3000 hit player, which is a surprise. However if teams had pitched to Ruth instead of around him he might have made it. Same with Ted Williams; in fact absolutely certain with him. |
Sep-11-09
 | | Phony Benoni: In their cases, it was more Ruth losing four years of everyday play while a pitcher, and Williams losing five to military service. |
| Sep-11-09 | | Jim Bartle: Of course Ruth also wasn't a Yankee in his early years. |
Sep-11-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Ah, you're talking 3000 hits as a Yankee. Let's see--2518 hits with the Yankees in 15 years, so he would have needed 32 per year, and he was walking 125-150 times. And can you imagine how many walks he would have gotten had Gehrig not been following him in the lineup! |
| Sep-11-09 | | Jim Bartle: Yes, definitely the record they're talking about is most hits as a Yankee. I wonder how different it would have been had Ruth and Gehrig been a left-right combination. I'm sure they weren't a picnic for lefties, but they must have eaten up right-handed pitchers. |
Sep-12-09
 | | WannaBe: Jeter is still not up to par, as far as the 'oldies' goes... There are statistics, and there ARE statistics, and there are <STATISTICS>... Please allow us the following:
(D)erek Jeter: Career (officaial at bats) 8589
(L)ou Gehrig: Career (official at bats) 8001
(D) batting avg. .317
(L) batting avg. .340
(D) Career Home Runs 223
(L) Career Home Runs 493
Number of years played:
(D) Still alive, and kicking... 1995-2009, 15 years still going.
(L) R.I.P. 1923-1939 17 years.
RBIs...
(D) 1064
(L) 1995 (!!)
So, is it <REALLY> a big deal breaking Lou's record... Personally, <I DON'T THINK SO>... Bottom line is, if give me one gazillion-billion at bats, I probably can break all kinds of records... but does that 'really' mean anything??? |
| Sep-12-09 | | Jim Bartle: I don't see anybody saying Jeter is better than Gehrig was; that would be ridiculous. But it's still a nice milestone. It's also pretty impressive that there are still four Yankees who played on the 1996 team: Jeter, Rivera, Posada and Pettite. I don't think you'll find that too often after 13 years. (Of course Pettite left and came back.) |

| Sep-12-09 | | johnlspouge: Hi, <Phony Benoni>. I have another game for your DIRP collection: Sakaev vs Kramnik, 1989. |
Sep-12-09
 | | Open Defence: <Note that Korchnoi, who finished ahead of Sax in the general crosstable, actually wound up with fewer Grand Prix points since he scored fewer points against World <Cjp> players> a minor niggle in your Brussels World Cup Collection... sorry to be a buttinsky |
Sep-12-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <johnlspuge> Thanks. It seems even Kramnik cannot escape the power of the DIRP! <Open Defence> And thank you for pointing out the error. I fear it's not unique, however, so feel free to butt in any time. I'd rather be right than ... well, not be right. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Interesting game between Oakland and Minnesota today: five of the six runs scored on sacrifice flies. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/gamece... |
