Oct-31-06  percyblakeney: Carlsen must beat Karjakin first though, not that easy...
Oct-31-06  L13: Oh yes, my bad. I forgot. Anyway, it's a possibility.
Oct-31-06  alicefujimori: Carlsen and Karjakin will be a very good matchup.
Oct-31-06  percyblakeney: My guess is that Radjabov will beat Volokitin/Harikrishna, but that is of course far from certain.
Oct-31-06  panC: Can someone who speaks french+has lots of time to kill please translate all those interesting interviews that are posted on the official website. At least do Radjabov/Carlsen/Karjakin ones.:)))Pretty please with sugar on top:)
Oct-31-06  percyblakeney: <panC>

I don't know any French and only tried Babelfishing it so I probably misunderstood it completely, but it seems as if Radjabov says something dubious. Approximately that he would prefer if there were no women in the competition since it's embarrassing for a strong player to lose to a woman. Hopefully Babelfish got that one wrong though...

<Pour ma part, je pense que les compétitions importantes doivent se jouer séparément comme au tennis. C’est bien connu que pour un fort joueur c’est gênant de perdre contre une femme>

What he certainly does say is that he's not sure that Kramnik is the best player in the world even if he naturally is the World Champion, and that he maybe wouldn't win a second match against Topalov. Radjabov's short term goal is to reach the top three of the rating list, and later become the highest rated player. He doesn't think that Kramnik will accept to play any match against him, but doesn't sound as if he's taking that too hard.

Oct-31-06  Sannder: My french sucks, but I think:

<As far as I'm concerned, I think that the important tournaments/competitions should be seperated, as in tennis. It is well/commonly understood that to lose to a woman is very embarrasing to a strong player.>

Oct-31-06  percyblakeney: Ouch, he shouldn't have said such a thing...
Oct-31-06  Thrajin: Is it possible that he was making a joke and it was taken out of context?
Oct-31-06  percyblakeney: In the mean time Volokitin-Harikrishna is rook + 6 pawns against bishop + knight + four pawns, draw maybe?!
Oct-31-06  Sannder: What was the question asked , <Percy>?
Oct-31-06  percyblakeney: <Sannder> He was asked what he thought of the form of the competition and said that it was good for the public, but...
Oct-31-06  Softpaw: <Pour ma part, je pense que les compétitions importantes doivent se jouer séparément comme au tennis. C’est bien connu que pour un fort joueur c’est gênant de perdre contre une femme>

Quite straightforward. My translation:

"As far as I am concerned (for my part), I think that the important competitions should be played separately as in tennis. It's well known that it is embarassing (awkward) for a strong player to lose to a woman."

Oct-31-06  percyblakeney: I wonder if he truly means that Judit Polgar shouldn't be allowed to compete with the male players?
Oct-31-06  vlado23: its probably a joke since its a bit of a back-handed compliment to the women players. perhaps he's been to see borat.
Oct-31-06  percyblakeney: Well, let's hope it was a joke...
Oct-31-06  Softpaw: I think it's most likely NOT a joke.
Oct-31-06  vlado23: its equally likely that the badger is a typical unreconstructed eastern-european
Oct-31-06  vlado23: didn't Topalov say something similar about losing to women players?
Oct-31-06  percyblakeney: Volokitin-Harikrishna ½-½ in game 1.
Oct-31-06  Softpaw: <didn't Topalov say something similar about losing to women players?>

It was reported that he did, indeed.

Oct-31-06  alicefujimori: Given Radja's rubbish about Kasparov preventing him from getting top level tournament invitations in the past, I doubt this one is a joke.
Oct-31-06  vlado23: "Women, by their nature, are not exceptional chess players: they are not great fighters." suppossedly a quote from Mr Kasparov

http://www.quotationsbook.com/quote...

Oct-31-06  percyblakeney: "They're all weak, all women. They're stupid compared to men. They shouldn't play chess, you know. They're like beginners. They lose every single game against a man."

Supposedly a Fischer quote...
