|Mar-19-09|| ||KARPOVian: Will Inarkiev play in World Cup?By the way congratulations to Evgeny Tomashevsky,the new European champion!I'm also glad to see that the Russians (Tomashevsky,Malakhov,Inarkiev)dominated the entire field which also includes top European players.Only recently Alexander Grischuk won Linares;Svidler winning Aker Chess challenge 2008 and Gitelcom 2009;Kurnosov emerged victorious in Arctic Chess Challenge 2008 and Hastings 2009;Anish Giri's remarkable runner-up finish in Corus C. The giant-slaying ways of Kalmykian prodigy Sanan Sjugirov deserves some attention.Also equally impressive were
Bocharov,Grachev,Savchenko,Vitiugov etc.Really a great moment for a great country.Go Russia!!!|
|Mar-19-09|| ||KARPOVian: I forgot to say that Kurnosov almost win Aeroflot with amazing victories and Savchenko took clear first in Moscow Open 2009.Chessgames.com where are the games in Moscow Open 2009?When you will upload it?|

|Mar-19-09|| ||DCP23: Great, more tiebreak fun!|
|Mar-19-09|| ||Eyal: The regulations said that 22 players should qualify from this tournament to the World Cup, but as far as I can make out it's 23 overall - 9 of the 11 players who finished with 8 points (<Sokolov, Inarkiev, Naiditsch, Tomashevsky, Navara, Malakhov, Jobava, Kobalia, and Guseinov> - Nyback and Grachev have already qualified from last year's tournament); the 7 players of those who finished with 7.5 points who had the best tiebreaks (<Meier, Nijboer, Fedorchuk, Timofeev, Sjugirov, Bartel, and Mamedov>); and the 7 players with 7.5 points who won the qualification matches (<Savchenko, Sakaev, Vitiugov, Petrosian, Nisipeanu, Lupulescu, and Motylev> - Bologan and Papaioannou also qualifying from last year's tournament). Possibly the reason is that from last year's 23 qualifiers (http://www.eicc2008.com/en/qualifie...) Movsesian is going to qualify by rating, so his spot became free.|
|Mar-19-09|| ||PhilFeeley: <Eyal: ...Bologan and Papaioannou also qualifying from last year's tournament.> Thanks for the summary. I'm surprised the others didn't already qualify from last year's tournament. They're all pretty strong, but I don't remember last year's results.|
|Mar-19-09|| ||Eyal: <I'm surprised the others didn't already qualify from last year's tournament. They're all pretty strong>|
Not all of them played last year, but at any rate it's quite difficult to qualify from such a tournament - very close field and huge competition. For example - players like Vallejo Pons, Akopian, Cheparinov, Volokitin, Caruana, and Nepomniachtchi didn't manage to qualify, and except for Cheparinov they all played last year as well. So I'd say it's quite an achievement by Nyback, Grachev, Bologan and Papaioannou to finish in qualification spots, so to speak, two years in a row.

2009 European Women Champion!
|Mar-20-09|| ||adair10: Congratulations to Kosintseva. What a finish!|
|Mar-20-09|| ||DCP23: After an incredibly strong showing at Aeroflot where T.Kosintseva toppled very strong 2600+ and 2650+ male GMs right and left, I must say this title is most deserved!|
|Mar-20-09|| ||khursh: Congratulations to T. Kosintseva !|
|Mar-20-09|| ||whiteshark: Well done and congratulations, T. Kosintseva!|
|Mar-20-09|| ||DCP23: Natalia Pogonina wins the tiebreak for the 3rd place 3:1 vs Maia Lomineishvili and thus gets the Bronze.|

|Mar-21-09|| ||KARPOVian: So here it goes:
Interesting to see how the Russians& former Soviets dominate this year's event!!!
|Apr-30-09|| ||Eyal: <Turkey has won the case against the ECU, which was filed due to the claim that the European Chess Union was thwarting the organization of the three major European Chess events in Turkey. The judicial court in Lausanne decided that European Individual Chess Championships are cancelled and bidding procedures of all the major events to restart.|
According to the civil court judgment regarding the trial between the Turkish Chess Federation and the European Chess Union on April 22, 2009, the ECU Board decisions taken during the meeting held in Novi Sad on August 29, 2007. The court ruled that all of the decisions regarding the European Individual Chess Championships 2009 (for men and women), European Club Cup 2009 (men and women) and 2009 European Youth Championship in 2009, are canceled altogether. This means the results of the European Individual Championships are canceled and should be held again. The players who won the titles and gained the right to play in the World Cup lost their rights. Furthermore, the ECU will pay 6.800 CHF to the Turkish Chess Federation for compensation.> (http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...)
