The 19th Annual Linares Super Tournament held from February 23rd to March 10th, 2002 was a category XX event. Six of the world's best players, including the FIDE World Champion, and one Spanish talent, competed in a double round robin format. The participants were (in order of ELO): Garry Kasparov (2838), Viswanathan Anand (2757), Michael Adams (2742), Ruslan Ponomariov (2727), Vassily Ivanchuk (2717), Alexey Shirov (2715), and local Spanish favorite Francisco Vallejo-Pons (2629).
