Wageningen 1958
Compiled by Phony Benoni
--*--

After the Munich Olympiad of 1958 finished in late October, Mikhail Botvinnik made a couple of visits to sites in the West related to his later work in computer engineering. First was a brief trip to a silicon purification plant in Erlangen, Germany. Afterward Botvinnik, Salo Flohr, and their wives travelled to the Netherlands from October 25-November 16 at the invitation of Max Euwe. Botvinnik appeared on a television program about the computers of the day, gave eleven simultaneous exhibitions, and played in a small tournament at the university town of Wageningen.

The tournament was known as the Caltex-Scheepjes tournament after two of the sponsors: Caltex Petroleum Maatschappij (the Dutch branch of the California Texas Oil Corporation) and the Scheepjeswol (a brand of wool) factory from Veenendaal. It was held at the Hotel de Wageningscche Berg, with these participants:

Mikhail Botvinnik, Hans Bouwmeester, Jan Hein Donner, Salomon Flohr, Frits Roessel, Theo van Scheltinga

Botvinnik wasn't in prime form, missing a winning shot against Bouwmeester in round two. Otherwise, the drama came in the last round when Botvinnik and Donner were tied for first going into their last round game. The Dutchman put up some good resistance, but mistakes near the time control allowed Botvinnik a winning combination.
