Jan-27-05  Saruman: Mieses resigns because of; 27.♔f1 (♔h1?? ♘f2#) ♕f6+ 28.♔e2 ♕f2+ 29.♔d1 ♕f1#.

Phony Benoni: Coming into this round, Mieses was in sole possession of second place in the tournament. When Maroczy lost, Mieses had a chance to jump into first with a win. Instead, this disaster sent him into a tailspin in which he would score only 1½ points in the final twelve rounds.

Perhaps the whole White attack starting with 16.exf5 was just a tad optimistic with his queen so easily locked out of play of the queenside.

An interesting line is 26.hxg3 Rxg3+ 27.Kf2 Qh4, when Black threatens mate in a few moves and any White check on the seventh rank is answered by the crosscheck ...Rg7+ winning material.

By the way, I don't agree that a move allowing mate in one is worth two question marks when the only alternative allows mate in three.

Feb-07-09  Banoboy: "Saruman: Mieses resigns because of; 27.Kf1 (Kh1?? Nf2#) Qf6+ 28.Ke2 Qf2+ 29.Kd1 Qf1#."

I agree with the poster who said that appending a ?? to 27.Kh1 is unnecessary, as would be even a single ?, considering that the most White can do is delay mate a few moves. Also, 29...Qf1 is only one of three possible mating moves.

Feb-08-09  whiteshark: <20.Qa4> was worth a try. It activates the misplaced white queen to make a comeback on the weakened black kingside, e.g. <20...Ne6 21.Qe4+ Kh8 22.Qh4 >

kingscrusher: Interesting tactically If White has a problem with delayed gratification for getting material back - apparently quickly - then perhaps White should have improved the Queen first before this f6 stuff which acts as a temporary pawn sacrifice.

Move 18 was an early opportunity - For Qb4/Qa4 - to get the queen usefully as part of the attack. Qc4 gives d5 with tempo so maybe not as accurate.

20.Nh5 could be replaced with 20.Qc4 with advantage to White

21.Rxf6 is a tactical disaster allowing piece undermining. Instead 21.Qc4 is still slightly better for White.

Chessical: <22> g3? loses the game as Mieses loses a tempo necessary to safely evacuate his Rook.
