Sneaky: A thank you! A perfect addition for my Game Collection: Crazy Rooks!
Jan-20-05  Javid Danowski: Here is a game with a similar ending, but with the boot, as it were, on the other foot. Schlechter vs Janowski, 1907
Feb-13-06  Castle In The Sky: TGIM! Got it quickly and now I can sleep well.
Feb-13-06  dkulesh: great game
Feb-13-06  Mating Net: I almost got dizzy watching that Rook go 'round in circles. Truly a desperado Rook.
Feb-13-06  dkulesh: i must be a hypocrit and disagree that this is an apropriate monday puzzle, yes few pieces are involved but the idea is relatively advanced, i would say this is a very good tuesday puzzle
Feb-13-06  dkulesh: in other words, i need my "mate in two" for a little blind confidence.
Feb-13-06  dzechiel: Pretty easy. Especially if you have seen this theme before.
Feb-13-06  shaikh123: this game is very much similar to a game known as "take my wife".
Feb-13-06  GiuocoPianoMan: I must be missing something obvious- but why can't Black play 61 KxR?
Feb-13-06  blingice: It'll be stalemate. I was looking for a win, so I didn't see the move.
Feb-13-06  JoeWms: CG.com changed the Monday game plan! It never entered my mind to look for a game-saving draw. I enjoyed it.
Feb-13-06  Confuse: these kind of games (although humorous) make me angry. why is there a stalemate rule in chess? clearly black is winning. stalemate should be victory, not a draw. can anyone explain why stalemate is a draw in chess instead of "its the rule"? I think its funny to watch that rook run around chasing the king like a guy chasing a girl, but is it logical?
Feb-13-06  Ken MacGillivray: <giuocopianoman> If 61... KxR white is stalemated.
Feb-13-06  you vs yourself: <Confuse> In this game, I think it's a nice punishment for black. Black could've avoided the stalemate by playing with a plan. A pawn on a4, rook on f4 and all black has to do is keep advancing the g and h pawns.

Stalemate is a reward for players who hold on to a slim hope and punishment for those players who are too overconfident in a winning position and play without the presence of mind.

Feb-13-06  Hidden Skillz: heres a deep one Schlechter vs H Suechting, 1911

offramp: David Janowsky (Thinking): Empty salons. Corridors. Salons. Doors. Doors. Salons. Empty chairs, deep armchairs, thick carpets. Heavy hangings. Stairs, steps. Steps, one after the other. Glass objects, objects still intact, empty glasses. A rook that checks, three, two, one, zero....

cu8sfan: Endgame week, I love it!

Nice pattern in the end, looks like the black ♔ and white ♖ are playing musical chairs. (-:

Feb-13-06  zabbura2002: hahaha this is so funny.. it should be called a suicide attempt
Feb-13-06  blingice: <Confuse> If you think about it, what happens with a stalemate? Your ♔ can't move, nor can any other piece you have move. Why should you be punished for not being able to make a legal move? I mean, you WANT to be able to make a legal move, but the mean dude playing you just won't LET you. What a jerk. I think THAT guy should be punished...
Feb-13-06  Hongkonger: I saved a game once myself in exactly the same way. Three pawns down in the ending, I offered a draw (which was refused!) and then I started a series of unstoppable rook checks with a rook that was immune to capture.
Feb-13-06  nescio: <Confuse: can anyone explain why stalemate is a draw in chess instead of "its the rule"?>

Strangely enough, abandoning the stalemate rule would probably result in more draws than there are already. Many endgames would be much more dangerous for the side with a disadvantage, so the players would play more conservative and wouldn't take any risks.

Feb-13-06  Confuse: interesting responses from everyone, thanks for the comments! i guess it adds to the game more then it takes away. thanks everyone! : ]
Feb-13-06  Infohunter: I saw the idea right off. This wasn't because I was so inspired, but rather because I couldn't conceive of there being a win for White in this position. Given White's disadvantage, it seemed only logical to look for a draw and, lo and behold, there it was: The stalemate sacrifice. Declining it gave the "ring-around-the-rosie" finish, but I guess Black decided to cut it short once he saw its inescapability.
