  offramp: 24...Bf5!
Feb-17-05  Shams: Shams: damn you offramp, for making me work!

I see that 24...Qd3 gives white a perpetual. but it does look like giving back the bishop first, and then playing 24...Qd3, gives black the better game. am I missing something?

nice find. (is it yours?) ;)

offramp: Someone mentioned the game on this site and I was playing through it on Fritz and this is the move that came up; I didn't see it myself.

I think it leads to a perpetual check after

24...Bf5! 25.Qxf5 Qd3 26.Qg4

< or 26.Qf7 Nxe5 27.Qh5+ Kg8 28.Rxe5 Rxe5 29.Qf7+ Kh8 30.Qh5+ = >

26...Kg8 27.e6 Nd8 28.Qh5 Ndxe6 29.Qf7+ Kh8 30.Qh5+ =

I am not sure if either Adams or Lane have seen that!

Richard Taylor: Lane annotates this game in the book 'The Ruy Lopez Explained' (Gambit Books)

There he points out that they saw this after and in fact Adams saw it and was trying for a win (hence he sacrificed his Q.)

So, as Lane pointed out, instead of
22. Qf7+ 22. Qg6 was winning (or at least "more accurate".)

22. Qg6!

Then if ...

... hxg5 23. Nxg5 Bf5 24. Qxf5 Qd3 25. Qf7+ Kh8 26. Qh5+ Kg8 27. Re3 Qf5 28. Rh3 wins the black queen for sure.

Jun-03-10  whiteshark: <19.Qh5!!> and Black could already resign.
