maxi: Does anybody know if this very agressive setup in the Najdorf variation (6.Be3 followed by 9.f3) is due to Byrne?
Apr-05-07  Vorph: <maxi> Yes, it is, according to Dennis Monokroussos: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...
Apr-05-07  Ulhumbrus: One objection to 15...Qxc4 is that on c7 the Q supports the pawn advance ...a5, which is to say that the capture 15...Qxc4 loses a tempo towards making possible this pawn advance. 19...f5 disturbs Black's King side pawns without necessity , and may make it less safe to castle there, while keeping the King in the centre may lose. This looks like a losing mistake.
Apr-06-07  forlino: What if Black plays 27...Bd8? What would White play? Ka1? Re1? Even if White played 28. Bg5, Black would still be threatening 28...Rc8+ (winning the Queen). Maybe I'm not seeing something. I've never written algabraic notation before -- forgive me if I made a mistake with these characters.

--- P.S.: SORRY, actually I think I just realized that 28. Ka1 would be good, since if 28...exd4, then 29. Re1+, with no real way for Black to defend. Is this correct?

maxi: Thanks, <Vorph>. Perhaps it should be named the Byrne (and not the English) Attack, after all.
May-04-09  sfm: 26.Nc7+! An easy move to miss.

plang: 19..f5 is a hard move to understand though Byrne's punishment is impressive
