Mar-13-03  kostich in time: Nice game..I like the sustained energy of blacks attack, culminating in a mate by castling!
Mar-13-03  ughaibu: I like white's exploitation of black's weak black squares to penetrate with the king. The old bad bishop problem.
Dec-26-04  Granite: Really a nice display of using the pawns to support an attack. The queen shuffles along defended by the pawns bringing the king to his doom.
May-04-05  SBC: It seems that this extraordinarily brilliant win by Lawrance Day from the 1968 Chess Olympiad in Lugano, Switzerland should get more press.

From the games in this database, Lodewijk Prins played high-level chess for 56 years (35 years at the time of this game). I wonder if he'd ever before been mated by 0-0-0.

May-04-05  Milo: 26.Bf3, maybe?
May-04-05  Milo: I guess that leaves white down the exchange...

IMlday: 22.hxg4 is bad. He missed 25..Rxe1.
Canada upset Holland 2.5-1.5 to qualify for the A final on tiebreaks.
Jun-24-06  dakgootje: Could white save it by returning the knight? Eg 23. Kf2

Nice game btw!!!

Jun-24-06  thundershock2k: whoa! castle mate! thats neat, now i need to find me an en passant mate

IMlday: Of course White has ways to return the material and be slightly worse. Missing 25..Rxe1 was fatal.
Feb-01-07  schnarre: 0-0-0# Nice finish!

An Englishman: Good Evening: This gives new meaning to the phrase "castling into it." Very impressive game.

Gypsy: Mr. Prins was great sport about it! A surrender would definitely have spoilt some the aesthetic aspects of the attack.
Feb-01-07  Tenderfoot: haha, whoa, castling mates rock my face. That's way cooler than just moving the king. I'd probably have just moved the king and been kicking myself for blowing my opportunity right afterwards.
Feb-01-07  syracrophy: Black could have even played quietly 31...♔d8 and 32...♔c7# <32...♔e7# in case of 32.♕g3>

But of course, its just making fun of the fact that the discovered mate by moving the ♔ is unavoidable

Oginschile: I'm wondering about this. In the book Learning from the grandmasters, Mr Day stops the game transcription at 28... Qe4+, and gives the resulting moves as the plausible finish. I don't have the book in front of me, but I have read his notes on it many times, and I believe he said his opponent resigned after 28... Qe4+ because he was unwilling to play out the logical result.

Either way, this is a beautiful attack. Whether the castle-mate happened or not, it was definitely the logical result - as 29 Kd6 leads to mate just as quick

al wazir: <IMlday>: (If you're tuned in.) Did you announce mate in X moves, or was this played out to the end?
Feb-01-07  laskereshevsky: HELLO FOLKS
Will be nice see same picture of BEATLES playng chess.......
Feb-01-07  Defiler: <Tenderfoot> <I'd probably have just moved the king and been kicking myself for blowing my opportunity right afterwards.>

Phony Benoni: Not a bad pun, but I would have preferred "Someday My Prins Will Come".
Feb-01-07  Sibahi: J.H. Donner would've liked this game ..
Feb-01-07  Tactic101: Beautiful game. Nice mate as well. I love that piece sacrifice. Very inspired game from black.
Feb-01-07  CitricAcid13: I can't believe black missed 31. ...Ke7#!!!!!!?! It's a shame, really.
Feb-01-07  blair45: I agree with Gypsy -- Prins could have stormed out of the hall or pouted in the corner -- that's the modern way.
