Aug-23-03  tud: Duplicated
Jun-24-04  biglo: Yes tud it is a duplicate of the only other Ivanov/Karpov game on this site.
Nov-18-05  notsodeepthought: As has been noted on his main page on this site, Ivanov died yesterday. He is perhaps not that well-known among younger players, but in his best days he was capable of gems like the above, winning in style (an exchange sacrifice, and a second one offered) against top-notch opposition.
Nov-25-05  THE pawn: This game is a tornado of forks.

LIFE Master AJ: I saw the dupe a while back ... I think they have combined the two now.

This game is nicely annotated by IM John Donaldson in 'Chess Life.' (January, 2006; page # 09.)

Jan-09-06  Koster: Looks like another case where giving check is natural, and wrong. Black could have played 38... h4 with the idea of Ra1+ Kh2 Qg3+. White might have to play Rd1, allowing exchanges and easing black's position.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Is this the game where Ivanov pretended to be drunk to psychologically upset Karpov? You don't need to pretend to be drunk to win a chess game. I showed up drunk at a total of three tournament games and won them all. One of them would have been a candidate for a brilliancy prize, if one had been offered.
Jul-13-06  Landman: Of course, <A. Englishman> was a bit too tipsy to notice that it was scholastic event. =P

  Peligroso Patzer: Here is some analysis of the final position to illustrate why Karpov resigned: 43.♕a6+ ♔d8 [43...♖b7 44.♕xb7+ ♔d8 45.♖xd7+ ♔e8 46.♕c8#; 43...♔b8 44.♕a8#] 44.♕a8+ ♔e7 [44...♖c8 45.♕a5+ ♖c7 46.♖xd7+ ♕xd7 47.♗xd7 ♖g6 (47...♔xd7 48.♕d5+ ♔e7 49.♕xg8 ) 48.♕xf5 ♖d6 (48...♖a6 49.♗b5 ; 48...♖g8 49.♗e6 ♖e8 50.♕f6+ ♖ce7 51.♕d4+ ♔c7 52.♕a7+ ♔c6 53.b5+ ♔d6 54.♕b6#) 49.c5 ♖d2 50.♗e6 ] 45.♖e3+ ♔f6 46.♕a1+ ♔g6 47.♖g3+ ♔h6 48.♖xg7 ♖xg7 49.♕f6+ ♔h7 50.♕xf5+ ♖g6 51.♗e4

offramp: 38...h4 draws, as <Koster> said - so when black threatened mate with 35...Qg7, perhaps 36.Rxe6+ would have been better.

dernier loup de T: I would not like to minimize the performance of Ivanov in this game; but the way of playing choosed by Karpov here is all but "Karpov-like". For people speaking french: "tarwelder" published very recently a gorgeous analysis of it, on his youtube channel.

yiotta: I was lucky enough to play him in 1992 (L.A. Open?). I lost, but he found the game interesting and he was kind enough to analyze with me (well, I was just along for the ride). At one position he said "Is this a draw? No, no, I win this."

Later at home, it took me hours to grasp what he understood in a few seconds.

If I recall, the first game in Kasparov's "The Test of Time" was a draw with Igor Ivanov when they were juniors.

RIP, GM
