Aug-29-05 | | gopal936: May be karpov played 40.e5 under time pressure being last move of time control but no doubt he was hard pressed for win and draw or defeat was one and same thing.Sicilian and Nimzo-Indian were two weapon used by kasparov in this match hence kasparov would not have played any other than sicilian karpov should have thought this. |
Aug-29-05 | | Hesam7: <gopal936> According to GM Keene the game is lost anyway: 40 g6! h6 41 Rxe8+ Qxe8 42 Nd1 Na3 43 Qf7 Qxf7 44 gxf7 Rb1 45 Bf3 Nc4 46 Rf4 Rb8 |
Sep-30-05 | | smeagol2005: correct score here is 42. . .Ne3
not 42. . .Nd4 |
Sep-30-05 | | Stevens: <smeagol> by coincidence i was looking ovr this game on the fritz databse the other week. I too expected ...Ne3 but i'm sure it was ...Nd4 that was played. It still wins thought i forget the continuation. |
Sep-30-05 | | Stevens: It should be 42...Nd4+ however

 | | offramp: A reminder that my incredible Kasparov-Karpov complete .pgn file can be found at http://www.megaupload.com/?d=39RVQA4A
It is free of course...
It has every game they have played, no duplicates, dates for all games and clock times where I could find them. 230kb. |
Sep-30-05 | | RookFile: What Stevens is saying is, 42... Nd4
is CHECK. |
Sep-30-05 | | Stevens: <rookfile> exactly, thanks for clarifying. Sorry if my post wasn't too clear. |
Nov-09-05 | | alexandrovm: what an incredible fight! |
Nov-11-05 | | TomMatthews: Kasparov Blunders on his last move! Missing the obvious 42...Ne3 forking King & Queen - what a PATZER! Lucky for him Karpov resigned!!! |
Nov-11-05
 | | chancho: He problably saw the fork. Winning the Queen would have been nice, but winning a whole Rook, and keeping his knight seems very logical. |
Nov-11-05 | | Queens Gambit: <TomMatthews ,what a PATZER!> i guess that comment must be a joke. |
Nov-11-05 | | iyutan: superb! |
Nov-11-05 | | who: <Tom> after 42...Ne3+ 43.Kf3 Nxc4 44.Rxe8+ Bf8 45.Rxf8+ black has a queen for a rook (4 points). After 42...Nd4+ 43...Nxe6 he will be up a rook and a bishop - 8 points. Seems like he made the right move to me. |
Nov-11-05 | | alexandrovm: <King & Queen - what a PATZER! > lol, that's a good one ;) |
Nov-11-05 | | Steppenwolf: I remember vividly 23...Re7 twenty years ago. We spent hours analysing that move, which is pure genius. Such moves are unbelievably hard to find OTB. They are counter-intuitive (a rook with no space to move!) and tremendously courageous. I believe this simple move was the turning point in the K-K passing over of the crown. That game was of course the ultimate one in the championship and that move was the deepest of the game. |
Nov-11-05 | | sitzkrieg: Why is Re7 the best move? |
Nov-11-05 | | alexandrovm: yes, good question. why? |
Nov-11-05 | | sitzkrieg: Thank you alexandr. I thought it a pritty smart question myself too. |
Nov-11-05 | | sitzkrieg: I suppose my grammer is less good:( |
Nov-12-05 | | Calli: Why Re7?
Karpov should play 23.f5! exf5 24.exf5 Bxg2+ 25.Kxg2 Qb7+ 26.Kg1, threatening f6 and now if 26...Bxc3
27.fxg6 wins. After 23.Be3? Re7!, however, now 24.f5 exf5 25.exf5 Bxg2+ 26.Kxg2 Qb7+ 27.Kg1 Bxc3 is good. |
Nov-12-05 | | sitzkrieg: Thanks |
Nov-14-05 | | alexandrovm: so, at that point in the game, Karpov was almost winning? |
Mar-27-06 | | Joao Quinta Godinhos: Curiously, Karpov never played e4 against Kasparov again. He had a reputation of a Sicilian killer, but he couldnt kill Gary's Sicilians, well, but this can be explained as we all know due to Kasparov superiority over Karpov. |
Mar-27-06 | | refutor: <joao quinta godinhos> what superiority? check the historical record...+1 over 200 games doesn't sound like superiority to me |
