Sep-13-10  Bobwhoosta: Wow, that's an amazing win considering the position "seemed" equal at first glance. The problem was white's advanced c-pawn, and the doubled pawns on the kingside. With both weaknesses white had insurmountable difficulties, but it takes a real positional genius to bring about destruction so quickly and accurately!!!
May-15-11  libertyjack: There's an amazing video with the thoughts of the two players during the game available on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUtp...

I recommend it

PawnSac: that one's down too! lol
Jun-24-24  Teyss: After the Queens are off the board, Karpov immediately identifies White's weakness: the b2 Pawn while the WN is far away and doesn't have many useful squares. He freezes the Kside with 23...g5 and 24...Kg7 preventing Rf6, then perfectly replaces his Knight with b8-d7-c5-a4 (who said a Knight on the rim is dim?).

Granted he was helped by his opponent who apparently didn't see the manoeuvre and lost time with Kf2-g3-f2. Maybe he should have prepared for d4 earlier to obtain counterplay in the centre. For memo of course not 34...Nxd1? 35.d7 and Black only has perpetual.

I love the way the BK becomes an attacking piece with e5-e4-d3. The end is typically Karpovian: White is completely paralysed (apart from the K and the g2 P) and 43...e5 follows.

The pun: I guess it's linked to White's player first name and the fact it was apparently played in TV premises. Also a small advantage for Black (b2 weakness) turns out to be decisive.

Jun-24-24  Teyss: PS: for those who are not familiar with photography, "The Camera Adds 10 Pounds" is a standard saying meaning wide angle lenses can make people appear larger than they are. Karpov was a thin man back in 1982: don't know if this reference was intended by the pun.
Jun-24-24  alussinan: <Teyss> : Thanks for the explanation. I had no clue about the meaning of the pun ... what is more, I'm french ...

Are you a Communist? There is a definite correlation between "Slim" and "Adds 10 lbs".

Jun-25-24  Teyss: Hi offramp,
I'll take the Fifth ;-) Yes I pointed out the correlation in my first post, in my second I was just wondering if the pun was also referring to Karpov's slimness, contrasting with his solid play.
