Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-21-03  ughaibu: This is the only short draw of Morphy's in the database.
Mar-21-03  refutor: i wonder who offered the draw? white's position "feels" superior to me ;)
Nov-27-03  PinkPanther: <This is the only short draw of Morphy's in the database.>

Morphy must have been doing his Konstantin Sakaev impression :-)

Nov-27-03  Yuri54: Finally word got out that developing pieces, especially against the king's gambit, is effective. Black seems to have a solid defense for now and might have even broken through the kingside. I wouldn't be surprised if Lowenthal + Allies argued for 20 minutes about 3. d5, followed by Nf6.
Apr-24-07  wolfmaster: From the games I've seen, this has got to have the most play in a drawn position from all the other games I've seen.
Jan-31-11  twinlark: <ughaibu> <This is the only short draw of Morphy's in the database.>

There is also the mysterious Morphy vs H Kennicott, 1857, which may have been found and added to the database since you made your observation.

Dec-30-13  thomastonk: From "The Era" of July 25, 1858: "Consultation game played at the London Chess Club, between Messrs. Moprhy, George Walker and Greenaway, against Messrs. Mongredien, Löwenthal, and Medley." Then this game follows. Final remark: "At this point, owing to the lateness of the hour, the game was given up by mutual consent as a draw. It appears to us, however, that Black have the better game." Then a brief analysis follows. I will submit a correction slip.
Dec-30-13  morfishine: Black's game falls apart after 21.Bxf4 <21...bxc5> due to 22.dxc5 Bxe5 23.Bxe5 Rf8 24.Rd3+ Ke8 25.Bd6 Rf7 26.Bxe7 Rxe7 27.Qg8#

And if Black tries 21...b5, White can sacrifice a rook with 22.Rxb5 cxb5 23.Qxb5 and here Black cannot try 23...Rb8? due to 24.Nc6+ Nxc6 25.Qxc6 Bxf4 26.Qxf6+ Kc7 27.Re7+

Perhaps this is why they went to bed

*****

Dec-30-13  thomastonk: Löwenthal gives several lines in the final position. Firstly, 21. ♘cd3 f3 with some variants, which I omit here. Secondly, 21.♗xf4 bxc5 22.♘f7+ ♕xf7 23.♕xf7 ♖xf7 24.♗xd6 cxd4. Here, Black is indeed clearly better, but 22.♘f7+ is a really bad move, of course.
