Sneaky: A friend of Panno's, really? Anecdotes! Give us some anecdotes!
Feb-09-04  Bitzovich: yea , please!!
Feb-29-04  doctor collins: Actually i'm one of his pupils, i'm 24 and i know him since 1993. Nowadays he plays very few games, he's about 2480 but in analysis is over 2600. Anecdotes... One of his pupils several years ago was also Claudia Amura, the best female Argentinian player. He showed her some Nunn's games and told her: See? This is the wrong way to play chess! (it is well known that he doesn't like games full of tactics without positional basis, check his opinion about B33: Both sides are bad (!!))
Aug-28-04  molinov: <doctor collins> you are 24, you are Panno's pupil: you're not Rubén Felgaer, are you?
Aug-29-04  Lawrence: <molinov>, doctor collins was last seen exactly 6 months ago. Probably won't see your post.
Sep-14-04  ConLaMismaMano: <molinov> GM Rubén Felgaer is 23 years old, i know he studied some time ago with Panno but i don't know if he still does.
Jan-18-05  doctor collins: I'm back...after a long time.
No, I'm not Ruben Felgaer, although I
know him and I played white against him in a school tournament when he was 16 (and he was already IM, I guess). Ruben is still studying with Oscar and he's the best Argentinian Elo today.
Mar-13-05  lopium: I know a Carlos Fornasari from Argentina. He was more an inventor of chess problems than a player. But he played. My uncle is Aldo Haïk, and he have a nice relation with Carlos and Spassky.

Mateo: I think Spassky went wrong with 16... b4? He should have played the simple 16... Bg6. After 16. e3 b4! (only now) 17. Na2 Nb5!, Black has an equal game.

In the game actually played, 23. Qd2! was sound. If 23... Ne4 24. Qb2 Nd6 25. Ra1 Qc7 26. Rc1, White wins the e5 pawn.

24. Qb2 is not the strongest move. 24. Rb3 b5 (only move to save the Knight) 25. Ne5 wins a pawn.

26. Ra7 is not bad but not the best. 26. Rc1 b5 27. Kh2! (not 27. Rb3 b4) followed by 28. Rb3.

The final combination is beautiful and good.

Jan-04-06  RookFile: Would Spassky play 16.... Bg6 17. e3 b4 18. exd4 bxc3 19. dxe5 and what would be the consequences.

Mateo: <RookFile: Would Spassky play 16.... Bg6 17. e3 b4 18. exd4 bxc3 19. dxe5 and what would be the consequences.> 19... Nd5 with a fine game for Black (have a look to the two passed pawns, to the nice square for the Black Knight and please note that the Black Bihop to g6 is not so bad now). You has no reason to be afraid about 20. Qb3, since 20... Nb4! 21. Qc3 Nd3 22. Nd3 Bd3 23. Rd1 Bf1! 24. Rd8 Rfd8 is good only for Black.
Aug-28-07  krusheto: Wonderful game! Just look at the black's helpless rooks and queen. A true masterpiece by Panno!
Apr-16-08  mmmsplay10: A pun associated with this game is:
A Panno-rama of attack!
What does that mean?

chessgames.com: <doctor collins: I am a friend of Panno's and he told me this is his favourite game of his whole chess career> We think that quote says it all for this game, and congratulations to member <tpstar> for today's winning Pun Entry, a pun on the catch-line "Book 'em, Danno" from the famous television series Hawaii Five-O, as well as a reference to being "booked" in the opening. Well done!

WannaBe: I think that is 2 for <tpstar>, the other one (so far) being Mikhail's Navy... =)
Jun-07-09  TheaN: 32.Rag7† Kf8 33.Qa3† Rb4 34.Qxb4† Rc5 35.Qxc5† Qd6 36.Qxd6† Ke8 37.Rh8‡ 1-0 would have been funny, as this is the position prior to the mate:

"Spassky? Seems like someone who doesn't know how to play chess...." :)

Jun-07-09  Benzol: Tony (<tpstar>) must have watched a lot of TV in the 60's and 70's.

:)

Jun-07-09  technical draw: Good game and pun. Of course it's show your age. hehe..(Your grandfather saw Five-O, your father saw Magnum)
Jun-07-09  randomsac: I finally get the pun thanks to all the kibitzing. The game is nice, especially seeing just how dangerous two rooks on the 7th are.
