 | | fm avari viraf: A very lively game by Sandor Boros giving a good lesson to Szabo " The Art of Attack". It's very sad to know his untimely demise. May God Bless His Soul Peace In Heaven. |

Oct-07-07 | | Marmot PFL: I wqs thinking for the last 10 moves he would probably sacrifice that rook soon, so he sacrifices both. |

Oct-07-07 | | dabearsrock1010: a cracking game by white |
Oct-07-07 | | pawnofdoom: Cool how white can play 23. ♗xf5 without worrying about 23. ... gxf5. Normally the g-pawn is pinned to the king when that happens, but this time, I think whtie has ♕h5! which leads to mate. And its also pretty impressive how white sacs two rooks for two pawns and then wins with just a queen and a bishop. |
Oct-08-07 | | kevin86: The white piece3s have a ballet on the white colored squares that has 'em dancin' in the aisles! |
Oct-08-07 | | kevin86: The last FOURTEEN moves by white were to white squares! |
Aug-02-23 | | Brenin: Black's P on g6 is supported by Ps on f7 and h7, so kick them both aside with R sacs (27 Rxh7+ and then 28 Rxf7+), and let the Q+B attack finish the job with 29 Qxg6+ etc. |
Aug-02-23 | | Brenin: After 27 Rxh7+ Kxh7 28 Rxf7+ Rxf7 29 Qxg6+ Kh8 30 Qxf7 Ng5 White has 31 e6+ d4 32 exd7 Nxf7 33 dxc8=Q+, and is a Q ahead. |
Aug-02-23 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: A acid tactic resolves: 27. Rxh7+ Kxh7 28. Rxf7+ Rxf7 29. Qxg6+ Kh8 30. Qxf7 Nf8 31. e6+ Bf6 32. Bxf6# |
Aug-02-23 | | jrredfield: White manages to get his e pawn all the way to the top with this line: 27 Rxh7+ Kxh7 28 Rxf7+ Rxf7 29 Qxg6+ Kh8 30 Qxf7 Ng5 31 e6+ d4 32 Qh5+ Kg8 33 exd7 Rf8 34 Qg6+ Kh8 35 h4 Rf6 36 Qe8+ Bf8 37 hxg5 Rf1+ 38 Bxf1 Kg7 39 d8Q c4 40 Qxd4+ Kg8 41 Qg7# |
Aug-02-23 | | Refused: ah, classical double rook sacs on h7 and f7 to get the queen to g6. Still nice. Apparently I get better at not being distracted by the double puzzle layout. Really buggered me at the start of the week. |
Aug-02-23 | | agb2002: White has the bishop pair for a bishop and a knight. The pawns on f7 and h7 protect g6. This suggests 27.Rxh7+: A) 27... Kxh7 28.Rxf7+ Rxf7 (28... Kh8 29.Qh3+ and mate in two; 28... Kg8 29.Qxg6+ and mate next) 29.Qxg6+ Kh8 30.Qxf7 wins (30... Ng5 31.e6+ d4 32.exd7; 30... Ng7 31.e6, etc.). B) 27... Kg8 28.Rfxf7 Rxf7 29.Qxg6+ Rg7 (29... Ng7 30.Rh8+ Kxh8 31.Qh7#) 30.Rxg7+ Nxg7 31.e6 wins. |
Aug-02-23 | | Mayankk: Beautiful double Rook sacrifice, although the second Rook will immediately be returned. All Black pieces are reduced to mere bystanders at the end versus the deadly White Bishop pair. 27 Rxh7+ Kxh7 28 Rxf7+ Rxf7 29 Qxg6+ Kh8 30 Qxf7. Now Black has a variety of options to lose, some of which are A) Do nothing. 31 Qh7#
B) 30 ... Ng7 31 f6 and the Queen is lost or mate at g7. C) 30 ... Bishop moves and the Queen is again lost. And so on. |
Aug-02-23 | | mel gibson: I guessed the first move but didn't see a mate. A 15 move mate is difficult.
Stockfish 16 says:
27. Rxh7+
(27. Rxh7+ (Rh3xh7+ Kg7xh7 Rf1xf7+ Rf8xf7 Qg4xg6+ Kh7-h8 Qg6xf7
Ne6-g5 e5-e6+ d5-d4 e6xd7 Ng5xf7 d7xc8Q+ Kh8-g7 Bd3-c4 Nf7-h6 Bb2-c1 Be7-h4
Qc8-e6 Bh4-f6 Qe6-d7+ Kg7-g6 Bc4-d3+ Kg6-h5 Qd7-h3+ Bf6-h4 Qh3-f3+ Nh6-g4
Qf3-f7+) +M15/93 102)
White wins _ mate in 15. |
Aug-02-23 | | Brenin: I like the idea of having two POTDs (or should that be PsOTD?) each day, and it may seem churlish to grumble in the face of this generosity, but why not issue the second one 12 hours after the first? That would give us more time to concentrate on each of them, and it might also be appreciated by those of us in time-zones for which the standard POTD-time is in the middle of the night. Those in the Americas would have a breakfast treat waiting for them. |
Aug-02-23 | | Lambda: There are some pitfalls if you take the wrong pawn first. 27.Rxf7+ Kxf7 28.Rxh7+ Ke8 29.Bxg6+ Kd8 30.Bf5 might look as if you're going to get material back thanks to the pin, but the bishop is pinned to a mate threat on f1, giving black an extra move to organise a defence, or even just move the knight and make the bishop on f5 the hunted. |
