Dec-21-12  mistreaver: White to play. Saturday. Difficult.
It sure is a mess on the board. I would say there are 3 tempting continuations : Nxe6, Bxe6 and gxh7+. a)Let's try the most primitive one:
29 Nxe6 Bxe6 (else black loses the exchange) 30 Bxe6+ Kh8 and i can't find anything promising. b) 29 Bxe6 Bxe6 and white is in trouble
c)29 gxh7+ Kh8 and again nothing
While i was considering these continuations, i stumbled upon a fourth candidate move: d) 29 Rxe5, the idea is to divert the black dark squared bishop.Black has 2 alternatives d1)29... Bxe5 30 Qh6 (threatening mate) hxg6 31 Qxg6+ Bg7 (Kh8 32 Rh3+ is curtains) 32 Rf7 and white wins
d2)29...exd5 seems like a better try. I can't find promising continuation for white. This one is too much for me. Time to check
Dec-21-12  JG27Pyth: Oh sure make fun of the prophecy, but look around you: The Mayan civilization is gone! Eerie isn't it? Speaking of doomed, my attempts at solving this position...
Dec-21-12  morfishine: <Shams> On your question <Is White not just better on 29.Bxe6+ Bxe6 30.Nxe6 Rxd2 31.Nxc5> Thats the first continuation I looked at, but thought it was not very convincing 31...Rxa2
Dec-21-12  Abdel Irada: In my analysis-such-as-it-is, I don't think the first move (29. gxh7†) can be considered the key move, since it involves no risk or real complications: Black can either take or not take.

It is the continuation (30. Qg5) that does deserve an exclamation mark — assuming it holds up — since it offers Black his choice of two pieces and only *threatens* to threaten.

Unfortunately, <al wazir> used more than his fair share of exclams today on the <Kenneth Rogoff> page, so I'm completely out of them.

Dec-21-12  morfishine: I started out guessing, made my guess by guessing, and I'm still guessing.

It looks like White played a head game move 29.Bxe6, which psyched-out Black into not accepting, when he should have.

I guess

Dec-21-12  Patriot: White is up a pawn for the bishop pair. White's bishop and knight are hanging.

29.Nxe6 Rxd5 is not good.

29.Bxe6+ Bxe6 30.Nxe6 Rxd2 31.Nxc5 Rxa2 is bad for white.

29.Nf5 Rxd5 30.Nh6+

A) 30...Bxh6 31.Qxh6

A.1) 31...Rd7 32.gxh7+ Rxh7 (32...Kh8 33.Rg3 may be winning) 33.Qg6+ Rg7 34.Qxe8+

A.2) 31...Re7 32.Rf8#

A.3) 31...Qe7 32.Rf7

B) 30...Kh8 31.Nf7+ Kg8 32.gxh7+ Kf8 looks like it may be winning; white certainly has the option of going for a draw with 32.Nh6+.

29.Nf5 exd5 doesn't seem to change anything.

I think 29.Nf5 is white's only chance.

playground player: Mayan civilization may be gone, but the Mayans are still here.
Dec-21-12  morfishine: <Patriot> On your comment <For some reason, I thought it was bad for white. I'm not so sure why I evaluated it that way> I figured its not bad, but its not very winning looking, so thats why I moved on...
Dec-21-12  dfcx: Got this one! not bad for the last puzzle before you know what.

29. Bxe6!
Black can't take the white Q. The best black can do is 29...Bxe6
30.gxh7+ Kxh7
31.Qd3+ Kg8
Now white can take the B back with
32.Nxe6 Rxd3 (best defense, other moves white can play 33 Nxd8.) 33.Nxc5 Rxf3
34.gxf3

Now white is ahead by two pawns, not an easy win yet.

Dec-21-12  kevin86: is white's next move the simple SxQ?
Dec-21-12  abuzic: 29.Nf5 Rxd5 30.Nh6+ Kh8 31.Nf7+ Kg8 32.gxh7+ Kxh7 33.Qc2+ e4 34.Qxe4+ Kg8 35.Nh6+ Kh8 36.Nf5 Rxf5 37.Rxf5

Dec-21-12  James D Flynn: White is a pawn up but 2 of his pieces are under attack. The White K is safe for the moment but the Black K’s last pawn cover can be removed on the next move by 29.gxh7+ : Black can answer that By Kh8 using the White pawn as cover. White may be able to avoid the loss of a piece by creating threats against the Black K. There are tactical shots based on the B on d5 pinning the pawn on e6. The e6 pawn can be take By Bxe6+ for instance 29.Be6+ Bxe6 30.Nxe6 the N cannot be taken because after RxN Qxd8= wins . That position leaves both Qs under attack., but the N also attacks the R on d8 so Black has no choice but to exchange Qs 30……Rxd2 31.Nxc5 or 31.gxh7+ followed by 32.Nxc5, the difference is that Black has only one way to recover a pawn after 31.gxh7+ Kxh7 32.Nxc5 Rxa2 and White is a pawn up but with a Black R on the 2nd rank and the passed Black a pawn a win is far away. Taking the h7 pawn appears more promising on move 29: 29.gxh7+ Kh8(If Kxh7 30.Rh3+ Kg8 31.Qc2 and White cannot prevent Qh7+ when fi Black takes either piece White will win the B on g with a K chase) 30.Qg5 (threats Rf7 and Nxe6 ) Re7(if Qe7 31.Qxe7 Rxe7 32.Nc6 Re8 33.Nxd8 exd5 34.Nf7+ Kxh7 35.Nd6 Rd8 36.Nxc8 Rxc8 and White is a pawn and the exchange up in the endgame) 31.Nxe6 Bxe6 32.Bxe6 White is now 3 pawns up and threatens to simplify by 33.Rf7 Rxf7 34.Bxf7 after which the slow plan of Rg3 or if the B on f7 is attacked Qg6 followed by Rg3 leaves Black completely tied to the defense of his K while White advances his c pawn supported by the R on the Ist rank.
Dec-21-12  abuzic: 29.Nf5
if 29...exd5 30.gxh7+ Kh8 31.Nxg7 Rf8 32.Rxe5 Rxf3 33.gxf3 Qc7 34.Rg5 black is under siege now and cannot even capture h7.
Dec-21-12  Kikoman: A very tricky puzzle for Friday, <Nxe6, Bxe6> and <gxh7+> are my candidates. :)x
Dec-21-12  morfishine: <dfcx> Very nice post! Cuts right through the confusion
Dec-21-12  chesscheater: Can someone explain clue 52 to me? It's driving me crazy. I don't see how you "index" the names into the answer.

WannaBe: <chesscheater> Maybe it's because it's not this game. =)
Dec-21-12  morfishine: Since the position is quite intriguing, I decided to take another look starting with <29.Nf5>:

29.Nf5 exd5 30.gxh7 Kxh7 31.Nxg7 Re7 32.Nh5 Rd6 33.Qg5 Rg6 34.Qh4 Rh6 35.Rf6 Rxf6 36.Nxf6+ Kg7 37.Nxd5 Rf7 38.Qg5+ Kf8 39.Qd8+ Kg7 40.Re3

I have the distinct impression that White has the advantage here due to open position of the Black King

Dec-21-12  lajube: Why is the final position 1-0?
Dec-21-12  Manic: <lajube> Confused me at first as well. The queen will be taken next move and white will be a piece and a few pawns up.
Dec-22-12  JohnAnthony: I liked Nf5, Qg5, etc. With Rook on 3rd and option to open g and h files the general threats are palpable there. would not have played Bxe6, the B is already so well placed!
Dec-24-12  LIzzard: I'm new to the site and not very experienced, so might be missing something obvious. Could someone explain why on 30 Black went Kh8? Bxe6 would set up an exchange with a net loss of a pawn and control of the only open file, as opposed to giving White time to position his rook. Might anyone be kind enough to let me know what am I missing?

THANKS
