Jan-05-13  RookFile: Too bad. Cochrane screwed up. 27.... Bxf2 doesn't seem right. Something like ....Re8 instead, perhaps?
Jan-05-13  fokers13: Seems like a case of premature resignation seems like there were bouts of that even back then.

Qxd5 and black is just fine.

Phony Benoni: At least we know Black didn't lose on time.
Jan-05-13  fokers13: Game was actually very well played(especially if we take the era into account),after running it through Houdini the only major improvements i found for black were 16..f5 instead of Bxf3?! and 27..Rg8! with a sizeable advantage in both cases.

27..Re8?? fails to 28.Nxf6!!

Jan-06-13  RookFile: Ah. This is interesting. I think I had my move numbers wrong before, I was proposing 26....Re8. But, maybe your 27. Nxf6 works all the same. Therefore, it would appear that 26....Rg8 is better, as you're saying. Thanks.

Looks like a terrific move to me. Never even thought of it. 30.....Qxd5 31. Rg3+ Kf8 32. Qh8+ Ke7 33. Qxa8? Qd1 mate. If white takes time out for 31. h3, black plays Qd1+, meeting 32. Kh2 with ....Qd6+

The more you look at it, the move it appears the the position after 30. Rf3 is an optical illusion, probably enhanced by the confidence with which Staunton made the move.

Thanks for the terrific observation.

Jan-06-13  fokers13: No problem glad you liked it:).

Thing is white has weaknesses of his own and the BK can escape just fine so yeah in the end too much fuss over nothing.

Feb-04-17  Cheapo by the Dozen: I'm not convinced by the 30 ... Qxd5 save.

31 Rg3+ Kf1
32 h3

seems to still nab the rook, although Black does have a lot of pawns as compensation.

So my current opinion is -- premature resignation indeed, but White was still winning.

Feb-04-17  Xeroxx: Black resigns in an equal position.
