May-05-04  TrueFiendish: An unhappy end, the game having only just started. He must have felt pretty ordinary about such a simple refutation to his play.
May-05-04  FerociousBeast: Pretty basic stuff here.. A red flag should go up for any new player saying that the queen is hanging if the bishop is removed.. You need to spot that otherwise you should not play chess if you did not spot it I have an idea for you.(checkers) Any 1200 uscf or higher will get this one in 30 seconds or less.
May-05-04  Dudley: Hey bestial blowhard, I have an idea for you-why don't you break all your fingers so you can't type anymore?
May-05-04  Benzol: <FerociousBeast> Anyone can overlook a tactic no matter how simple it might seem. Gunsberg was no pushover and even challenged Steinitz for the world title, giving a good account of himself in the process.
May-05-04  TrueFiendish: Dudley: "bestial blowhard"--LOL! (Careful, he's 2700, you know...)
May-05-04  Minor Piece Activity: grrrrrr. I'm a ferocious beast with not a 2700 rating, but a *2750* rating! I am so cool! If you guys didn't get this puzzle in 1/999999999999999999999th of a second you are obviously under 500 USCF. =D
May-05-04  yoniker: I bet FerociousBeast didn't solve this one.
May-05-04  TrueFiendish: It's easy to bleat on about how easy it was, how certain crucial factors should have been observed and how weak the practitioner's play was when the answer is right there in front of you. (And that's all the bleating from me today.)
May-05-04  rndapology: This puzzle was quite amusing...I suppose Gunsberg sort of walked off afterwards, it wasnt even much of a fight. Not even a chance to struggle in a middlegame. As for FB's repeated advice to pick up checkers or whatever, were you asked for that advice FB, seems rather nonscensical to answer questions that were never posed.

Honza Cervenka: Quite interesting is that Gunsberg made against Tarrasch the same mistake as Zukertort did three years earlier. See Tarrasch vs Zukertort, 1887
May-05-04  Chesspatch: Simple solution...

but not a position likely to be foreseen and maneuvered to in a tournament ...

... that's why Tarrasch's a GM

May-05-04  Chesspatch: Why not 11. ... Nxd4 12. cxd4 h6 (in preparation for the e4 knight hunt) and black gets away with a pawn?
May-05-04  Abecedarian: Pity, rather than venom is perhaps in order: "A red flag should go up for any new player saying that the queen is hanging if the bishop is removed." actually stands as helpful advice. The rest is typically illiterate obnoxiallia. So perhaps we should pat him on the head and say "poor beast, at least you're trying hard to overcome your mental, social and emotional problems".
May-05-04  Benzol: <Honza> It is interesting. I suppose that information wasn't as freely available in those days so Tarrasch got to kill two birds with one stone so to speak.
May-05-04  talchess2003: i think we should stop responding to ferocious beast, its just a cry for attention..

i mean anybody who claims to be 2700 USCF rated, says he plays chess on occasion, and solely writes unintelligible "self-inflating" remarks instead of any of the deep insights and calculations possessed by one of the top 10 players in the world.. is obviously a joker.

he must be pretty lonely in his own life, to be wasting his time like this =\

May-05-04  Abecedarian: As I said <talchess2003> its pity, not venom.
May-05-04  kevin86: I don't know-but would it be ironic if Ferocious Beast is Saddam Hussein,Usama bin Laden,or Bobby Fischer? lol.

I really enjoy this threepenny trap. No matter how black captured-his pawn would be pinned and a piece is lost.

May-05-04  pawntificator: This was a fun puzzle, not too hard at all. But I think yesterday's took a little more thought.

I'm surprised that Gunsberg even took the bishop before he resigned.

I went to uschess.org to check the top ratings...indeed, 2700 would place an individual in the top 5. Impressive, to say the least.

May-05-04  onthebeat1971: As for me, I solved the yesterday's puzzle very quickly, including the next 5 moves. The today's puzzle, I solved in 30 seconds. I need more practicing.

But, in spite of that, I'd like to say: it's easy to say that a puzzle is very easy or not. But, I really doubt that there is somebody that's never overlooked a tactical play like this. Therefore, don't be so arrogant.

May-05-04  Ed Caruthers: It's worth looking for patterns of mistakes. Look at the position & Gunsberg was probably pretty happy. He was way ahead in development, had a knight in the center, and was looking to get the rooks to the e & d files quickly. That's just where I'd be likely to miss danger.
May-05-04  onthebeat1971: Ed Caruthers, that's a good point.
May-05-04  Abecedarian: Seems like 11...Qd7 is the real blunder, while 12...fxe6 just terminates. Is there some way to create counter play after 12. Qxe6??, notwithstanding the pin on the queen and black going down a piece with 13.Rxe4? Obviously playing a piece down against Tarrasch is no fun. But <Ed Caruthers> has good point about superiour black development.
May-05-04  Whitehat1963: <FerociousBeast>, a friend of mine used to say that "the ones who talk the most usually do the least." Somehow, I suspect he was talking about the likes of you. 2700 USCF rating? Yeah, right. I seriously doubt it. Nevertheless, even if it were true, I suspect your TC rating(tact and courtesy) probably lies a couple of standard deviations below your I.Q.
May-05-04  myratingstinks: Not to take sides......... but, my rating fluctuates at about 1500-1600 & I saw this move. Although I must add that when you KNOW there is a solution, even the most basic brains can do process of elimination. There are only a certain # of legal moves.......
May-05-04  mikhs: I have seen this comment from FerociousBeast before in axactly the same wording. He must have just copied and pasted it again. My guess is that he uses this just to get a reaction from the rest of you and then sits back and laughs at all the responses. Franklty this is getting boaring and everyone would do better just to ignore him, otherwise he is getting exactly what he wants out of these comments. P.S. I do not think his rating is very high as he cannot even show enough imagination to change his derogatory remarks once in a while.
