. 22 ... Qf5+ leads to a Philidor's/smothered mate. |

aren't logical

Should look like

Not sure that the smothered mate works. Look at White's queen. However. a more prosaic 23. Rxa2+ Kc1 24. Bxf4+ Rd2. 25 Qa1# appears to do the trick. |
|
Oct-13-17 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: <beenthere240>, Ack. You're right that I was wrong.
On the other hand, I don't understand your line, since Black has a pawn blocking the a-file. |

22. Qg2 Qxa2+
23. K c1 (forced)
Bxf2+
24. since the king can't move, white has 3 ways to block the bishop: Rd2, Qd2 and Be3. The first 2 are met by 24...Qa1 mate, the third is met by Bxe3+, after which either Rd2 or Qd2 are forced and the Queen mates as before. White can move Queen to a1 because the she took the a2 pawn on move 22. |

Went back and reread my post. I had written 22. Rxa2, which is impossible. |

Oct-13-17
 | | Bubo bubo: The notorious opposite-castling brawl is in full spate; Black has serious threats, but it's White's move: White starts with 21.Rxg7+ Kf8 (or 21...Kh8 22.Rxh7++ Kg8 23.Rg8#), and now 22.Rg8+ Kxg8 23.Qg2+ Kf8 24.Qg7+ would be mate if e7 was still covered. Therefore we need a <vorplan> and continue with 23.Rg1+ instead: after 23...Kf8 24.Bg7+ Kg8 25.Bf6+ the bishop covers e7, and now the original plan works: 25...Kf8 26.Rg8+ Kxg8 27.Qg2+ Kf8 28.Qg7# Not very difficult, but cool: White sacs two rooks on g8 for the gain of a single tempo each. |

 | | FSR: 21.Bxh7+ was ridiculous. |
|
Jan-20-22
 | | Sally Simpson: Hi FSR,
Yes it is unexplainable.
click for larger viewIt appears White was too preoccupied with the threat to his Queen and Black playing Qxa2+ to notice he had a wonder combination on the board. So why not play 21.Bc4. Here we recall Adams once wrote a book claiming 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 wins!
(though in this case 21.Bc4 Qf5+ 22.Bd3 Qd5 is a draw.) After 21.Rxg7+ Kf8 he obviously never saw the Rg8+ idea. A combination that works like clockwork.
The funny point is if you remove the offending d3 Bishop so it cannot play 21 Bxh7+ (or 21.Bc4) click for larger viewThe exact same combination is still on. |
