Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-28-07  Marmot PFL: Ivanchuk is having fun in Montreal. Last game he gets to sacrifice a knight on d5, and here it's the classic bishop sac.
Oct-24-21  Brenin: 25 ...Bxh2+ is almost begging to be played. After 26 Kxh2 Qh5+ 27 Kh1 (Kh3 Rg6+ 28 Kf4 Qf5 mate) Rh6 28 f3 Black needs reinforcements, and 28 ... Nf5 is the obvious way forward, with Ng3 to follow. At this point White has many possible moves (too many for me, past 1am), but I can't see any giving a reasonable defence.
Oct-24-21  drollere: i had 25. .. Bxh2+, 26. Kxh2 Rh6+, 27. Kg1 Qh5, 28. f3 Qh2+, 29. Kf2 Nf5, which seems like enough.
Oct-24-21  PJs Studio: Ivanchuk and his balls of steel. Fearless to go into this with no guarantees at all.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Another speculative sacrifice; not even a GM of Ivanchuk's ability could have seen all this. Would have played this in real life but cannot guarantee that the game would have ended in my victory. Never played at Ivanchuk's level.

saffuna: <Ivanchuk and his balls of steel.>

You mean like this?

Ivanchuk vs Jobava, 2010

Oct-24-21  mel gibson: That was obvious to me.
The Bishop is taken and then the Rook
and Queen can join in with the attack
followed by the Knight.

Oct-24-21  saturn2: Easy to see the idea, diffiult to verify it also works.
Oct-24-21  awfulhangover: Nakamura: Nobody stands a chance when Chucky plays his best chess. Magnus, who has been outplayed by him many times, knows. Kramnik, who lost that super important game last round in 2013, knows, and wow, see how Kasparov, at his peak, was humiliated in 1991, Ivanchuk vs Kasparov, 1991

Dionysius1: I like the way Chucky's knight doesn't come to g3 until 31... . Reminds me of Nimzowitch's "The threat is stronger than the execution". He waits until the move is part of a plan, not just a flashy attack on the Q.
Oct-24-21  JohnBoy: I planned on 28.f4 (to either make black ep on f3 or rigidify the pawns). Is this worse than 28.f3?
Oct-24-21  Brenin: <JohnBoy>: After 25 ...Bxh2+ 26 Kxh2 Qh5+ 27 Kh1 Rh6, 28 f4 looks weaker than 28 f3, since Black has 28 ... Nf5 29 Nd2 Qh2+ 30 Kf2 Qg3+ 31 Ke2 Rh2 32 Kd1 Nxe3+ (the point: without White's P on f3 the Q protects e3) 33 Rxe3 Qxe3, with a significant advantage.
Oct-24-21  agb2002: White threatens Bxd6 and x-rays the knight.

The first idea that comes to mind is 25... Bxh2+ 26.Kxh2 (26.Kh1 Qh5) 26... Rh6+ 27.Kg1 (27.Kg3 Qg5#) 27... Qh5 28.f3(4) Nf5 (28... Nd5 29.Rc6 followed by Rxh6), threatening 29... Qh2+ 30.Kf2 Qg3+ (or 30... Qh4+ 31.Kg1 [31.Ke2 Ng3+] 31... Ng3) 31.Ke2(g1) Rh2.

chrisowen: No bullying good buddy darkness no?
Oct-24-21  AlicesKnight: Moderately easy for a Sunday at least in general principles (bishop sac, Q/R on h-file, reinforcements to come); it looked like ultimate win of Q for R/B. Nevertheless Ivanchuk times the order of events very well and makes it look smooth.
Oct-24-21  johnnydeep: First three plies were very obvious. After that I wasn't sure.
