Jun-26-13 | | geeker: The last two days' positions/solutions I remembered, having followed the original games live. Weird, I thought the Tregubov-Ponomariov game was much more recent than 2008 - my memory's usually not that good. |
|
Jun-26-13 | | BOSTER: <Dr.Funkenstein> <The tactical possibilities should favour white so we would be looking for these with or without knowwing this was a puzzle position.
Because it is puzzle, the winning move jumps out immediately>. First you said, that you can see the solution even in the OTB, then you said that you see the solution because it is puzzle.
Don't you think that this is a contradiction.
I'm sure that if you had such pos. in OTB , you would never think about Rb5. |
|
Jun-26-13 | | Dr. Funkenstein: I said it is easier to see the solution because it is a puzzle, but that in OTB at this point in the game, white would be looking for these tactical possibilities anyway because the position favors white's centralized position and more active pieces. |

Jun-26-13 | | BOSTER: <Bartimaeus Playing through the game it seems black made a series of errors>. I don't think so.
My opinion that black made only couple invisible mistakes.
First, I'd prefer to play 21...Rhe8, to move "h" rook on e8 instead 21...Rae8, because in some lines after exchange on d5 rook on h8 is hanging in the air.
Second, before playing 26...bxc6 I'd play in-between move 26...Qc4+ to activate the queen and then 27...bxc6. After such small changes we have the pos. with white to move.
Certainly , white a little bit better, but black could draw such pos.

 | | offramp: < Dr. Funkenstein: I said it is easier to see the solution because it is a puzzle, but that in OTB at this point in the game, white would be looking for these tactical possibilities anyway because the position favors white's centralized position and more active pieces.> That is not how I understood your comment at all. And nor do I think anyone else at <chessgames> does. The implication, as I saw it, was that you consider yourself capable of solving any puzzle however hard that you are set. AND you think everyone else is garbage. Why do you think these things?
Who annoyed you? |

Jun-26-13 | | James D Flynn: Material is equal but White’s pieces are more coordinated and dominate the centre.

28...Ka6 29.Rxa5+ looks winning. |

Jun-26-13 | | Abdel Irada: <<•> "A little calculation practice" <•>> As so often, <Phony Benoni> has pointed to the essence of the puzzle. Noting the isolation of Black's king and the queen standing in the left outfield, it is natural enough to look for a combination that lets the queen and rook penetrate and mate. As <whiteshark> might tell us, <<•> 28. Rb5†! > and that's it! I'm tired and lazy today, so I'm not going to examine each line (especially since that has already surely been done by others). But I will say that it doesn't require deep analysis to prove that White wins in all of them. Exactly as <PB> suggested: "calculation practice." :-) ∞ |

Aug-07-23
 | | perfidious: Looks as though 28.Rb5+ either denudes the enemy king of his pawn cover, or forces him to do the job. |
|
Aug-07-23 | | Brenin: 28 Rb5+ and if cxb5 then 29 Rd6+ and 30 Qd7+, with mate in a few moves. Declining the R sac is just as bad. |
|
Aug-07-23 | | Mayankk: Simpler than the other Monday puzzle. We need to have a day between Sunday and Monday for these bonus puzzles. White needs to keep checking due to Qa1+ threats. The only reasonable option is 28 Rb5+. With the annoying c6 pawn displaced, White's Queen and the remaining Rook will soon finish the job. |
|
Aug-07-23 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: This is really the Monday potd: 28. Rb5+ cxb5 29. Rd6+ Kc7 30. Qd7+ Kb8 31. Rb6+ Ka8 32. Qb7#. Easy! lol |
|
Aug-07-23 | | stacase: Bonus puzzle way way easier than Monday's so-called "Very Easy" offering. |
|
Aug-07-23 | | Refused: 28.Rb5+ +-
28...cxb5 29.Rd6+ Kb7 (or anywhere else) 30.Qd7+ Kb8 31.Rb6+ and black is getting mated. 28...Ka6 29.Rxa5+ doesn't solve blacks problem, he will still get mated. other alternatives for black are just nonsensical. |
|
Aug-07-23 | | agb2002: Black is about to play Rxe5.
The black king is defenseless. Therefore, 28.Rb5+: A) 28... cxb5 29.Rd6+ Ka(b,c)7 30.Qd7+and mate in three. B) 28... Kc7 29.Qd7#.
C) 28... Ka7 29.Qd7+ Ka6(8) 30.Qb7#.
D) 28... Ka6 29.Rxa5+ Kb6 (29... Kb7 30.Qd7+ Kb6(8) 31.Rb4#) 30.Qc5+ and mate in three. |
|
Aug-07-23 | | TheaN: The bonus is the easier Monday (is CG experimenting with inbetween difficulties?), because <28.Rxb5+> forces Black's hand entirely. After <28....cxb5>, 28....Kc7/Ka7 is mate or shortly after with 29.Qd7#/+ and 28....Ka6 29.Rxa5+ Kb6 30.Qc5+ #3, <29.Rd6+> creates a neat ladder concept that Black can't escape from: <29....Ka7> after Kb7 White also has Qxb5+ <30.Qd7+ Ka8 31.Ra6+ Kb8 32.Rb6+ Ka8 33.Qb7#>. It's a lot of moves, but once you see Rd6+ it's obvious. |

Just wondering why when we post the diagram from this game, the bonus puzzle, click for larger viewIt differs from the diagram posted on the other Monday puzzle. Vocaturo vs R Di Paolo, 2010 click for larger viewJust curious that's all... But whilst here...This threads bonus puzzle was a POTD in 2013. How can something we already have had be a bonus. It's like giving someone a Christmas present, waiting 10 years, nicking it off them, re-wrapping it and giving it back to them next Christmas. |

Aug-07-23 | | Refused: Pretty much all the puzzles have been on display before. So the bonus/extra puzzle also having been used in the daily puzzle rotation is something that really fails to grind my gears. |
