Feb-23-09  eisenherz: <Nigel Short: Is anyone watching the webcam? Who is which colour> Topa is playing white
Feb-23-09  blacksburg: isn't 4.Ngf3 strange here? 4.exd5 normal?
Feb-23-09  Eyal: Assuming Kamsky is black, 1...e6 should be somewhat of surprise since he has never played French before.
Feb-23-09  acirce: If the organizers made a mistake, they could have solved it easily. Just let Kamsky move first. 1.e5 e4 2.Nf6 Nc3 and so on.

  chancho: Topa is definitely white.

chessgames.com: The official regulations demand a color-switch midway through the match, specifically calling for the player who has White on the first game (i.e., Topalov) to have Black on the 5th game. And yet, the video camera and the official site seem to confirm that Topalov is playing the White pieces today. We are trying to figure out what's really going on over there we are ready to switch the coloration, but frankly we're just as perplexed as the rest of you.

So, if you see the photos of the players suddenly interchange position, that's why.

Feb-23-09  octoberowl: topa is white...god knows why...

Feb-23-09  vonKrolock: "How We Changed Faces In Sofia" - will the change be without some trauma?!
Feb-23-09  karnak64: Maybe we should just call them white and black for the nonce ...

Nigel Short: Topalov has played the French many times in his life, particularly when he was younger.
Feb-23-09  Marmot PFL: I played this line with black just yesterday - 5.ed5 Qxd5 6.Bc4 Qd6 7.0-0 Nf6 etc.
Feb-23-09  blacksburg: ICC commentators are also totally confused about colors.
Feb-23-09  popski: dOH, fRENCH :/ & my bet goes down the drain..
Feb-23-09  reyjf: Gata going for a d5,54 center.
Feb-23-09  blacksburg: <JFQ> betty boop is waaaay cuter than vassily ivanchuk :(
Feb-23-09  arkansaw: Topalov put a gun to Kamsky's head and demanded the white pieces.
Feb-23-09  amadeus: The schedule in the official has been informing us (for a couple of days) that Topalov would play game 5 with the white pieces -- but I thought it was a mistake.

Nigel Short: Sorry, I am a little bit out of it today. Kamsky playing the French? Well, who would have Adam and Eved it? Interesting development.

jessicafischerqueen: If Kamsky is playing the French-- Isn't it pretty much a sure thing that he has prepared this- specifically against Topalov's games against the French-- as a surprise weapon?

And he may have something really nasty prepared.

I betcha

Feb-23-09  reyjf: thats d4, e5 center
Feb-23-09  blacksburg: i was rather more surprised by 1...e5 from topalov than i am by 1...e6 from gata, honestly. especially since gata plays the caro.
Feb-23-09  popski: Topalov have white pieces?! WT..?

CG, I want my $200 back! :)

Nigel Short: The Tarrasch is a limp variation. 3.Nc3 is for men and 3.e5 also contains high testosterone. 3...c5! is the correct way to counter it.

chessgames.com: <popski: dOH, fRENCH :/ & my bet goes down the drain..> ... <popski: Topalov have white pieces? CG, I want my $200 back! :)> The Chess Bookie informs us that if the colors are incorrect then all wagers for game #5 will have to be refunded. And so you may have a reprieve for your Chessbucks.

It seems pretty certain at this point that Topalov has the White pieces today, in spite of their own regulations. We can't explain how or why, but it seems to be the fact.
